Go to REI - find a camping fuel bottle that is the same diameter as a bicycle water bottle. Then get a silver, black, or color matched aluminum bicycle water bottle holder and mount it somewhere it won't catch your pants. Then keep a 3/4 or full liter of extra fuel along with you and no more issues.

I use those bottles to carry extra 2-stroke oil on my cross country vintage enduro. Just make sure the one you get is made for fuel. The water bottle cap gaskets will not hold up otherwise. MSR and several others make what you need. Should be under $20 for the full meal deal.
