Does look good, could I ask what brand it is?? Also, do you think the kids might get burned without the pipe having heat shields? Just thinking out loud...I've got a 4yr old that loves to ride and I can picture him getting a good burn on that pipe.

It's actually a Kitaco pipe for the Monkey Baja out of Japan. I'll add some heat shields before the bike is finished. I have a long road to go on this project.

I figured you would. I remember getting burned on an old Honda Scrambler and it "scarred" me for a long time about bikes.

Re: 1998 Z50R Custom Project

Moose Racing makes a 6" carbon fiber exhaust guard that attaches via worm clamps. This looks to be the ticket for what the bike needs. If the pipe poses an ongoing problem, I'll either wrap it or get a minigunz. However, the guard will go on first.

Re: 1998 Z50R Custom Project

I have a couple of new updates on this project. The front end is about complete except for the custom wiring that will need to be done and the addition of turn signals. See first couple of posts so you all can see what I started with.

I scored and found a discontinued Kitaco Speedo in mint condition that exactly fits my application. More updates over the upcoming weeks.

I like the instrument cluster. Do they have a MPH speedometer? Also, what is the writing on the heat shield?

MBUK has a digital MPH speedometer made by Kitaco but the one I have is the only speedometer that fits the OEM Honda Monkey Baja instrument cluster and I wanted to keep this project simple (in relative terms).

Takegawa makes a complete instrument cluster that can be in MPH and KMH, but it also have temp, tach, shift lamp and a ton of other options and is their most expensive unit.

Wheelie-Kids. It's a brand name of the best custom shop in Japan, bar none. I just noticed the picture is upside down.

Check it out and see all the cool custom Titanium parts they make for monkeybikes. None better at the moment and the heat shield was only $40.

Is a speedo required in your state to be street legal?Or do you just like to have one?I just ask cause I didn't even bother to put one on my street legal mini.I really like the Baja headlight set up.Makes wish I had one on my little street ripper.

Holy crap did you take those lights from the movie "The Dirtbike Kid" which was the 2nd best movie to come out of the 80's besides "Rad" IMO

Looks good Dan, wish I had time to work on my Z

Factory JDM Z50JN (Monkey Baja) headlamp assembly and lighting cluster, minus the speedo. Each lamp is 15W/15W with replaceable bulbs. The Honda stators don't like much more draw then that.

I've been working on other bikes and this is going to be a winter project. I have three bikes ahead of it I want to have done before winter sets in.

Dan, great website. I don't know how you managed to find the best custom shop around, it must have taken over 600 hours of endless surfing : )

If this sweet little bike is really for your kids and not like the gaming systems, flat screen, and ipods you "Bought for your kids," then you should mount the heat shield to their leg with some zip ties.

Where did you source all those Baja parts? I have been in love with that front end from the moment I first say it!

I'm currently working on 5 projects at the moment and the Z50R Baja isn't very high on the list. I sourced the parts direct from Honda of Japan, and some of those parts are now obsolete. All the parts are here and I need to wire up the bike, build the engine and get the custom tank decals made up. Hopefully by spring/summer she'll be done.
