FP, what kind of shape was the stock pipe in? Have you ever considered doing some stealth surgery on that? Most people would figure it was way too much of a pain in the ass, but if you like to gas weld, and don't mind a painted pipe when you're done...you could probably cut the stock headpipe off, trim the opening at the front of the muffler back a bit and graft in a larger headpipe, and maybe open up the muffler on the back side and do some internal baffle retooling and close it back up. Hell, with your multi-carbed Hemi craziness you probably know someone who could do some crazy ceramic header coating on the thing too. I spent most of a weekend making pipes for my old GT triple out of some discarded 125 MX pipes. Everyone said it was a waste of time and it did take some fiddling and trimming and fitting and head-scratching, but the end result didn't look any dumber than the stock 3-into-4 rig and it sure ran great. The pipes outlasted the bike, too; nary a crack after lots of abuse. I also reconstructed the headpipe and lead-in to the divergent cone on my YZ490 after the former owner laid it down and ovaled the hell out of the pipe. I tried brazing that one, which cracked pretty quickly, but then I grew a pair and oxyacetylene welded it and it held for several years, as long as I kept the bike anyway. Used a cut-up Kawasaki F-something 350 pipe's bends, turned this way and that. My point is if you're careful and fit the pieces right first, the welding isn't too hard to do, and with oxyacetylene it's easy to fill in blow-throughs. Just use a small tip. Might be interesting to try since the CL pipe is sort of a cool cigar-looking deal... As technically wrong as it is, I used steel coathanger wire as welding rod on the YZ pipe, because a) it was free; and b) it melts quickly and blends into the puddle smoothly, so you don't run as high a risk of melting back the edges of thin expansion chamber steel. And apparently it doesn't get too brittle as the weld cools, thankfully. Last edited by mexicanyella; 11-05-2009 at 01:25 PM. |

The PP classic pipe would be an easy pipe to retro fit on to it I am sure...I can mig a new hanger bracket if you need it.

Stock pipe was missing, Classic too small if I add any cubes. I'll try the TB (Z50 pipe seemed very nice) first, then order some mandrel bends if it doesn't suit me.

Remember that it not a drag strip hot rodder... The classic pipe was designed for a 125 so should flow descent enough....you can always keep the FMF for that Saturday night street rodding. |

Do it Terry, 192 or nastier with but, a simple turn down for the pipe so it sounds loud and angry, fearsome and full of power and speed. GRRRR!!!
