I have only seen one person ride at 100% full speed foot out in four years of this stuff............... Everyone else was slooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow trying to ride like that Unless your one super bad ass racer it ain't gonna work....... Al is from north Detroit, rides lots of MX etc... has been super fast for years.... He is very very fast, he is so fast at it that he makes fast people look not fast! |

It is faster to ride "roadrace" style and drag knee on the minis.

I miss riding like that! That german kid is bad ass! I honestly think that is the best looking motard mini I have ever seen. Watch that kid ride and how much faster he gets to his apex than if he wasnt backing it in.

I'll also say that AL does not use this techinque in every corner of every track. From my on track vantage point it works very well for him in tight technical sections, going into faster sections or turns he uses a modified RR/SUMO position. ![]() I know a few riders that ride similair to said modified RR/SUMO but do not ever use the foot out style..... sort of an up right, loose, slightly off the seat position........ I can't make it work at all....... |

LOL I've got the perfect corner to get some pics. We'll be racing the AMA Am. National at Miller and they have a mini class. I'll see if I can get someone to get in there with a camera.

Alright so I've been playing with this a lot lately and can get it to break loose and slide into the corner, but I'm having troubles getting onto the throttle mid corner. Should I be using the clutch to increase speed or hand off the clutch completely and just use throttle control?? When I try to just use the throttle I feel like it's too choppy to be smooth coming out of the apex

I play around with it when we do indoor practice in the winter period. During the race season I don't use it much mostly because i don't put my foot down outdoors since the tracks are much more suited for the normal roadracing riding style. Indoor tracks are tight and it's faster to ride supermoto style. But I plan on practicing backing it in with my knee down this winter :P Pics from this winter: |

thought id give a little insite into this backing it in deal. i race sumo, on big bikes. the first miconception is that its a cornering technique, it is to a point, but mainly its a breaking technique. its an extreme form of late breaking or trail breaking. its a little hard to do on a mini, mainly cause of the short wheelbase. but mainly lack of engine breaking. the whole point of this is to keep the back wheel turning, just slower than the front. this helps bring the back out, you use the rear break and lean angle to control how far out it comes. but at no time should the rear wheel lock up! if your using the clutch, shift down into the proper gear for the corner, lean in and apply front & rear brake. more front, just wanna have some pressure on the the rear, very slight though. while doing all this your releasing the clutch just until it starts to grab, basically slipping it. the idea is that once at the apex of the turn your off the brakes and clutch lever is fully released, then open the throttle. general rule is wheel chatter less clutch, and remember you control the slide with the rear brake, but never lock the wheel up.

No minis have a slipper clutch so its kinda out the window to use the same technique as a full sized SUMO. Yeah I know not every SUMO has a slipper but it has become the norm has it not? We have a dude that rides foot out on a mini and it works on a tight short track fo sho. On a track like G&J, CRP, Beaverun, Jackson, its does not work out so well other than a very limited number of corners.... He can hang with the fastest on a SUMO all proper, AL has it dialed in. I have no idea how he slides that KLX mini ![]() ![]() I think its some of what was just stated by the Ill SUMO dude.........
