This is what made the biggest difference for me. 50s are so small that if you don't get them up pretty high pretty fast, you'll plow to a stop in almost no time. I can roll a pretty consistent 45ish on mine (big bars, street tires, stock brakes). I just come in near the top of 3rd and as soon as I let off the gas, pitch my weight forward and grab a fistful of brake. The tail should jump pretty high then you can back off the brake and feather it from there. Yeah, you'll flip eventually, but it's part of the game. I've only really gone over once (tore up my right shin), but it wasn't THAT bad. H/C stoppies though...I flip them on the daily and still suck at them.
