I didn't notice this post before. The Honda 250 and 450 engines have head breathers because they don't have crank breathers in the case. Before you mention it has another hose coming out of the case, that is the transmission breather. The crank and transmission cavities are separate on those. It's general design standards to place the breather in a high place to help with oil separation. For a horizontal 50 this isn't as clear as a vertical 250. The 250 has passages in the cover leading to the head breather to separate gas and oil. The 50 has the same separation passages built into the cases leading to the crank breather. The 250 shares the same concept on its transmission breather. Speaking of those passages, that is the major issue leading to oil coming out of the line when you add a head breather into a 50. There is nothing to separate oil and air unless you put in an inline catch can. This problem is exacerbated when you move to an oil that more easily forms oil vapor.

You don't "need' it but it only benefits your motor...... period.
It already has a breather on the back of the cases that works excellent

Why wouldn't you just route the hose to release the oil at the back of the bike like everyone else does? The hose is long enough then to where it doesn't blow oil everywhere.
I had it that way and it continued to spit it all over the ass end of my bike, I put the stock tappet cover back on and then routed the rear case breather to where it wouldn't spit it out and all is good now.... Not sure about you but when oil is 16.00 a quart and you change it every-other ride ( even if you ride 10 minutes each ride to take care of your motor ) You get sick of loosing oil.
