Re: New guy - CRF50 140cc motor swap with pics

Welcome to the wonderful world of pitbikes!. First off, clean bike! good choice. As everyone else has been saying, definately get a big bar kit. On my 50, I dont even have the name brand kit. I bought a cheap top clamp off of ebay for 40 bucks. Im jumping 25 foot gaps and it hasnt broke yet! I put a pair of bicycle bars on there and a KX65 throttle cable and tube. This was about 20 dollars so now your at a total of 60$. Next your going to need the longer front brake cable which BBR sells for $20. ($80 total). Then your going to need to get a good set of grips for 10-12$. Your only looking at about $90 in all. Which is very cheap. Who knows,I see the big bar clamps on ebay now for $20-$30. so that shaves off $10. Ill post links for you ASAP. For suspension, I See alot of people going with high end shocks that are way out of (my) range. ($250-$400). Some of the aftermarket Heavy Duty springs dont hold up to well, But some do. For the fork springs, mine are now very sloppy and worn because I didnt buy the heavy duty bushings and all that good stuff. So a good choice is to go with bigger forks such as crf70 or Aftermarket racing ones. There are alot of people on this site that give good deals on parts and are in very good condition. Just look around often and you'll usually see what your looking for. Any more questions dont hesitate to ask!

I also forgot to mention to get a different front brake setup like a perch and lever. You can find one of those easily. Im running a standard clutch perch with the clutch lever upside down Haha. there are some links for now!

If you are going to upgrade your suspension, dont even bother with hd springs, just get real hydro (sp-5' or crf70 forks are cheap) forks and a longer shock.

Re: New guy - CRF50 140cc motor swap with pics

Oh the dilema... Let me explain;

I just got a mid $400 offer on Ebay and a local guy on Craigslist who is willing to give me my $500 asking price cash (for the stock 50 motor). I'm really torn. I bought this to play with, something I could easily store and easily throw in the back of the suv and go. However after taking it around the yard tonight i realize just how small it is. I realize I could make it more suitable for someone my size, however that wont come cheap. I spent my budget on the bike and motor. So do I sell the motor to mod more? After looking at parts I realize I will need more then the money I get from the motor to make it the way I want. A buddy told me just sell it and take the money and buy something bigger. However I hav no where to ride something bigger. The whole point was small. I have small with rediculous power but little control. I just dont know where to go from here...

Your thoughts?

Re: New guy - CRF50 140cc motor swap with pics

well if you are thinking about selling the bike, definately sell it with the original motor in it.

and then sell the 140 seperately.

Thats the only way you will get most of your money back.

You are real close to me......so if you decide to keep it I can do my best to help get you the parts you need.

Goodluck.

Re: New guy - CRF50 140cc motor swap with pics

It has little control because of the bars forks and swing arm that you are using.

You really need to upgrade them to have better control.

Sell the motor and move onto the parts that you are needing to make it to suit your needs.

If you got a BMX bar kit and tall seat it would be light years better.

Re: New guy - CRF50 140cc motor swap with pics

Definently start with a big bar kit, i could barely control my 50 when it was totally stock with those tiny bars, they would hit my legs whern i tried to turn . if you have the money, i'd get a pro taper bar kit. it comes with an adjustable top clamp with a ton of mounting positions to suit your riding, a nice 7/8 pro taper mini bar, complete throttle assembly with cable (cable won't fit that carb), extended kill switch and front brake cable, and anything alse that i forgot. for suspension, i'd get a pair of 70 forks and put in some HD springs. at the least, i'd get a HD spring for your rear shock (big dif over stock one), or if you have the money, maybe an ishock or something similar to that. you'll be so much more comfortable riding!

Re: New guy - CRF50 140cc motor swap with pics

I think im just going to sell the stock 50 motor and pick up some parts to make this thing more rideable. Im trying to do everything as chealy as possible. Obviously im going to pick up a tall bar kit but I was also considering rear suspension. I came across this: EXTENDED SWINGARM SHOCK XR50 CRF50 XR CRF 50 125 BIKE :eBay Motors (item 200135968608 end time Nov-16-09 18:48:49 PST)

I know its not top of the line, but I need cheap and by the looks of it it will giv me some more clearnace as well. However I dont see the holes in the frame for the chain guard, etc... Wouldnt I also need to longer brake lines and chain as well? Suggestions?

If anyones interested here is a vid I did of the build. You get to hear what a 140cc sounds like on a stock 50 exhaust.

Im new to riding minis so it was a trip. Everythime you hit the gas it wants to flip your butt upside down!

Ahhh, good times.

The problems with these aftermarket off shore ones is that they wont work without relocating the shock mount on the frame.

Also most of those shocks that are offered in these deals on ebay will also not work. They are too wide in diameter to fit through the frame.
