Or you can ship it to me and I can hand it to Eyvind Boyesen and he can charge you $350 an hour for his time... and then you guys can bitch about that being too much and AHP being too cheap because I know giving you guys a good deal leads to bitching The first response in this thread to the guys question was a perfect explanation for someone who just wanted to learn what porting means.

I would rather pay 350 and get the thing ported then pay 100 and just have it cleaned up. But then again thats just me. My new head is done by DOOD |

Pretty easy to see what's going on... 75% of the potential gains in a port job are achieved with 20% of the work involved in getting the remaining 25%. There is a bit of "get what'cha pay for" involved. But...$350 is flat-out robbery for a 2v single head, regardless of the guy on the end of the grinder, unless seat changes and welding/filling is involved.

A little head such as these take much much less time therefore less cost merely from the time involved. When you pay someone to port your head you are not paying for the port, you are paying for the knowledge the guy has that is doing the porting. National level 450 heads sell for around 3500-4500 depending on who is doing the work if that tells you anything. Minibikes are pennies and don't have a "national" caliber hence why I still call them a hobby no matter how serious others take it. The car world is different because every "performance" shop from coast to coast "ports" car heads and just the shear volume of buyers. More buyers = cheaper price. Sorry to jack the thread... anyway... Porting is changing the shape, location, size, etc of the port to increase potential flow and velocity through the cylinder head. You can tailer the ports to the rpm, carb, cam, exhaust, etc that you are running. The ultimate goal is to build a happy engine. Going the biggest and the best only makes for an expensive engine. Porting is another way to designate the characteristics of the head whether you want low or high rpm power. Porting will move peak power and torque horizontal and vertical on the rpm scale so care needs to be taken when doing it. Last edited by cyclerider57; 05-30-2008 at 03:08 PM. | |

I don't wanna get in the middle of any debates of who's porting is the best or the best engine builder between this guy and the next. I just do what I do and let the work speak for itself. Don, Mark, Jordan, and many others have built and will continue to build kick*ss engines. We don't need to battle like some companies do for there are enough people in this world to keep everyone busy. period. |

| Re: what is porting Yes, I found those while surfing the web one day, the owner reported much better throttle response and top end power. I wonder what he would say if he actually had some good work done? |
