FYI: followup: yep, the stator's Exciter coil was bad. Still unsure of the spec's for it, but a "new" one fixed the problem immediately and only had ~300 ohms resistance. (Got it off an old 1979 Yamaha DT175 before I spent $$ on ordering a new one.)
