Plastics repair
by shmalphy 06-05-2009, 11:34 PM

When one of your plastics breaks, you can drill holes along each side of the broken edge. Then use wire to stich the plastic together. Go over the whole thing with epoxy and you have a sturdy repair that looks like hell, but your pockets are as full as before your bike broke.

Re: Plastics repair

try using these:
get a good 2 part epoxy, i use some stuff by philly bond
it comes clear so i usually add some food coloring till i can somewhat match it decently enought to my plastics color now first off this is a trick we used at my old work (navy shipyard for building submarines eb qounset point) heat the plastic with a heat gun but not till it melts just enough to heat it not burn it! this promotes the adhesion. get a nice small set of 2 clamps c, vise grips what have you (i hope the plastics are off the bike at this point) use rubber or if your like me and only have hobby supplies be weird and use balsa wood put it under the clamps one about a short ways from the outer edge of the crack and one on the inside. mix the epoxy and color mix now before actually clamping these together put some inside the cracks all the way then put tin foil on the wood (doesnt stick as easy if so just pick off) and clamp then apply a good sized layer not too much of this over the exposed crack just not on the wood and let it dry remove the clamps carefully and fill the rest in then buff the seam down using a dremel and if youn can find something to polish plastics use that. it looks decent from far off and seems to work just remember when clamping together dont fully sqeeeze the crack seams together just leave a thin space of epoxy as to not apply too much stress.
