| 6 Volt Engine Options?
I have a couple of hardtail Z50's that I want to build. Should I use the stock bottom end and head with a bore kit and a larger carb, or should I build up an SL70 bottom end? Both of my 6V bottom ends & heads are in excellent condition. I also have an SL70 manual clutch assembly that I can use on one of my 6V motors. Maybe go with a roller cam 12 volt engine? I wanna go with whatever will give me the most bang for my buck. I'm cornfused. Too many options. |

There is no replacement for displacement. A Lifan 110 will take you from 2 horsepower with an OEM Honda 49cc engine (on a really good day) to a claimed 7 horsepower. You can't beat the price including a TON of accessories to go with it, but you'll have to be willing to go Chinese and 12V on your accessories or dumb it down to 6 volts - which is an easy and cheap option if you want to keep things stock. PM me for more info. It will bolt in, but you'll need to buy a few aftermarket parts to fit the carb without it sticking out 90 degrees on the left side and vulnerable in a tip over. If you really want to extract max power in this setup you'll need to do a lot of match porting on the carb and intake - which is VERY time consuming. You'll also need a larger diameter header/exhaust to let it breathe. I just stuffed one in my hardtail... probably two months from firing it up. |

Thanks for the advice. I'm planning to stay with Japanese parts, though. I've never been bright enough to do things the easy way. |

The trans on the SL has nicely spaced ratios, for OEM stuff. I'd stuff a $75 50mm crank, and a DrATV 52mm jug and cam and a ported stock head. Add a late CDI or eBay IRK and rip it up. About $250 and 106 cheap cc's.
