I have a 78 z50 dirtbike that needs a little love.It runs but smokes alot and fowls the plug. From what I am told my problem is probably the valve guides.Would a machine shop be a ble to repair or should I replace the head?I was also looking at electronic ignition but not sure where to look,or if its worth it.Thanks for any info!

| Just get a new one it will bolt right in
I would say just go to http://www.hooperimports.com/dept.asp?dept_id=02 and get yourself a replica 50 engine. I have a copy on mine and it pulls harder than stock and always a first kick runner. Don't be fooled by people saying they are junk if the engine comes from a repitable place it is worth every dime. |

replacing the head would be much easier ...if thats the problem... to change from 6V I belive you will need a new fly wheel, ignition assembly and some moding to the cases |

if youre not concerned with keeping the bike stock, I'd go for the new chinese engine too. Check ebay as well. You can get a bolt in 70cc for pretty cheap money.

hey nice job with that 125 bike d0n. Are those things fast when done are they worth it? I am not trying to be rude but that bike looks so so so awsome why did you have to go and out and put those lights on that bike. Just save them for another bike. But that bike looks sweet there is nothing else i would have done different!

I haven't got a chance to ride it yet but with the 125cc engine and the 17/35 gearing it should do 55-60mph easy. I really like the UFO light. I do ride after dark sometimes too. To me, the UFO light makes the look of the bike. Everyone's different though. There's a white & black single, square headlight setup from the late 1990's honda XRs that I really wanted. They're kinda rare and pretty expensive when they do come up on ebay. I think the single XR headlight would look better. Hard to see but, this is it Last edited by d0n; 02-15-2007 at 05:23 PM. |

I would do the new chinese engine idea too. You will love the feel of a CDI engine over a clapped out 6V points engine like you have. Buy a 50 or 70cc engine, then grab a honda 12V ignition cover and the average person will never know its not honda. Sure your hardcore guys will notice... but at the same time they will understand why you did it. Do not waste a dime trying polish up that old relic of a motor... you can spend more than its worth quicker than you can say Z50. I know because I have been there... I spent about 350 on parts getting an 84 engine together (mostly electrical) and it was still mostly old crap when it was done. You wont be disappointed with a chinese replica engine! There are some vendors on the site that carry replacement motors. Mark at ahpminis is currently doing up an '85 Z50R, you might want to send him a private message or give him a call. |

Ditto my friend has a 1978 monkey and was running the stock tired as heck engine for months. Then after countless days of messing with the carb replacing points and adjusting to get a little performance out he knew it was not worth it. So he went on the ebay and got himself a new engine 50cc manual 4 speed for like $150 that a guy never used and now it is a first kick runner. They just have done such great things for so cheap money. You can get a 110 on ebay automatic or manual for $280 shipped. That is about how much your parts would cost from honda. Just some advice.
