80's Z50 question!!!

Ok, a guy had one of these parked outside with a for sale sign on it, and im gonna go steal it, how can i make it start for a safe trip home...

kidding...

to the real question, there really is a 80's Z50, the orange ones, down the road from me with a for sale sign on it. I know only his youngest kid rode it because I saw him once a week ride it just up and down the street, and that was it. Definitely no abuse by either kid that lives in that house. Looks like decent shape, but I was going to re paint it anyways.

My idea is to stretch the swingarm a ridiculous amount and put a fat back wheel/tire combo on the back. And then lower it a tad, and stiffin up the suspension and then street legal it, and kinda have a drag look of a bike, but a bike i can ride on the street. But want it kind of show look.

Few questions:

1. what motor should i go with, dont want to spend a crazy amount of money, but don't mind spending a decent amount to get a fast motor. I would like it to go about 65-70. Maybe even 60. are the mounting holes the same as just slapping in, say a GPX 160 or something?
2. the motors they come with, do they have any issues?
3. what shocks should i run in the back? and what should i do to the front end?
4. should i just extend the stock swingarm? or should i buy another swingarm and modify that up? if so, what swingarm should i go with? i kinda like the square tubing.
5. is there anyway to make the frame longer?
6. what wheels can i use to have a big tire in the back, and what wheel should i use up front that will still fit in the forks?

i have access to a mig welder, and i can get some steel, not sure exactly all that i can get. but i do have a welder, and i have access to a paint booth to paint all of my stuff. so what do you guys think, think ya can help me out a bit?

Re: 80's Z50 question!!!

1. Use whatever motor you want. Honda TB makes kits, all CRF50 aftermarket motors bolt in. Make sure you are careful what you buy. the 1980 motors have the short rod crank so you need to know what you're doing. Motor mounts are all the same though if you choose to drop in a new motor.

2. Nope. Adjust the points ignitions and you're all set for 30 years.

3. Use whatever shocks are the right length for your singarm and right stiffness for your weight. For road I'd consider some oil-dampened forks to keep it stable.

4. XR75 swingarm is +4 over stock Z swingarm. Cut the mounts 3/16 on the inside on both mounts, and weld on a brake stop for the rear wheel. All set.

5. Cut it, weld in a section, or buy the +1 frame from Fast 50's. You'll need to make some mounts though. The Fast 50's frame is for the 88-99 body panels. But you can handle it with a welder.

There are some Japanese wheels that bolt up to the older 4 bolt hubs. They are pretty nice. You can get them wider and taller.

thanks for the help, i was hoping you would be the one to chime in haha

looks like this will be a fun little project, well i say little, actually seems like a lot of work, but all the money is coming from profit from the bikes i have been selling, so its a profit bike haha

Re: 80's Z50 question!!!

first check and see if he has a title or paperwork, then check with your local dmv to see if you can legalize it.
