My Mood: | 92 Z50R stuck in gear
Any ideas on what it could be? Where do I start on possible ideas on what is causing it? The shifter will move up a little bit but it wont go down at all. When you try to kick start it the bike moves forward but looking in the spark plug hole the piston dont appear to be moving. I am not sure what to do. Should I pull the clutch cover? If I do is there any small parts that are gonna try to fall out? I bought the bike real cheap and it was already like this so I dont know the prior history on how it got this way. Any help someone can give me? Thanks

It sounds like the shift star bolt may have loosenend, letting the detent arm wedge itself onto the shift actuator arm, jamming up the works. You will have to pull the clutch cover, remove the clutch and the primary drive gear to be able to see all the above mentioned parts, and see what is amiss. The least you will be out is 600-700ml of engine oil, one clutch cover gasket, and a couple hours time. Take some clear detailed pics of what you find after removing the clutch cover, post them up, we can help diagnose from the pics most times.

would that cause it to feel like it has no compression when I kick it over?

Might just be that the clutch is slipping since the kickstart mechanism drives the crankshaft through the clutch. This does not necessarily indicate a problem. The clutch needs some engine speed to help it engage via centrifugal flyweights. Sitting still there's not much clamping force acting on it. In any case you kind of need to sort that shifting problem first. Even if you really do have an engine problem causing you to have no compression, which is fairly unlikely, that's not a big deal to sort out. Too soon to worry about that. See what's going on under that clutch cover first; successful diagnoses by photo aren't too uncommon around here...
