| Anyone with a 69-71 original title?
Wondering if anyone has an original title from a 1969-1971 Z50A from the US. Interested in getting street legal Z in NJ and have a few of these year frames to work from. Want to know if the original title states "FOR OFF ROAD USE ONLY" or anything like that. I called the DMV twice now and have gotten different answers. One said they are road legal and the other had no idea. Trying to figure this out before I start getting a title, lights, road tires, and all that fun stuff. Thanks! |

I've got a pair of '71 hardtails, K2 models, which came as a pair from a dealer and each had Manufacturer's Statements of Origin. The original buyer gave them to me with the bikes; he'd never titled them. The MSOs have a little typed notation about "not manufactured for use on public roads" at the bottom. I looked into titling them through Missouri and was facing a hefty penalty; in this state after 30 days of buying a vehicle you start getting a title penalty of about $25 a month up to a maximum of $200 (maybe it was $250). So they'd been at max penalty for decades. Instead I visited the Internation Title Service web site, downloaded their affidavit form, filled it out (states that I didn't obtain the bikes by any fraudulent means) and sent them that and the $85 fee for their service on pre-'74 vehicles. They sent me new paperwork which I took to the DMV and obtained a new Missouri title, which says nothing about off-road only on it. Essentially I sold my bike to ITS, and they sold it back to me through some affiliate in Alabama, which did not require titles until after '75. I've not progressed toward plating it yet, though. I DID have to have a police officer do a VIN# verification and run the VIN to make sure it wasn't stolen before they issued the title. So if the bike's history is unknown, beware and make sure you've got a bill of sale or something to show you didn't obtain it fraudulently if it comes up hot when the cop checks it out. Also be aware that the title service fee increases sharply on vehicles newer than '74. |

Thanks. My plan was to go through one of those title services to get a new title but only after I found out if these can be ridden on the streets here. Will have to talk to Razzo and see if he can help. Thanks! |
