brake switch on a z50 k3

So Im wanting to add a brake switch to my Z. Ive been looking at the wiring diagram trying to figure out how to wire it in and if would even work. I did a search and found a post with the same question but it doesnt really explain HOW to integrate it to the harness. Can anyone explain how to do this? Also, how would the second filament be activated if there are only two wires on the rear brake light?

If anyone has done this, please explain how you wired the brake switch.

Your taillight has to have a dual filament bulb if you want running and brake light. One filament will be constantly powered. The other will be powered through the brake switch. Does your light have 2 wires AND a grounded socket or just a power lead and a ground lead ?

It has two wires but I thought the bulb was a dual filament? Could I replace the pigtail with a headlight pigtail? Or is there another option

You need a means to attach the pull spring to the pedal and then a small bracket to hold the switch. A small L bracket fastened with a clutch cover bolt works good to hold the switch.

Im sure you are able to widen the hole in the brake arm return spring and and attack the pull spring to that.

Yup...Or even attach it to the bottom of the spring itself.

Re: brake switch on a z50 k3

I have a brake lamp switch on my 1976 Z50A. I had a tab welded on the frame for the stop switch and used a Honda Monkey brake pedal and spring. I also used a Honda Monkey 12V harness that had the provision to wire in the stop switch. But, I'm running full lighting, speedo, turn signals, horn, etc.

Completed 1976 Z50A Restomod

Any ideas on how to add the switch to the 6v harness?

Post up the wiring diagram to your bike and it shouldn't be difficult. You'll have to be careful where you tap into since those bikes have a balanced electrical system. If you tap the power from your existing taillamp, when the switch triggers, your brake light will pull power from the existing running lamp dimming them both.

here is the diagram. Looking at it, I dont see how the second filament would get powered with only two wires coming from the rear light.

You're gonna have to swap out the taillight socket for a 2 filament type. Looks like you have no choice other than tapping power off the brown wire to power both filaments.

You might be able to use these 6V led bulbs. They draw less amperage. If your savy with electrical you can make a single filament work as a running light and a brake light. The circuitry gets a little complicated though.

I have a couple of these NOS finnish Z50A softtail complete taillamp assemblies here with twin pole 6V bulbs. If you want a custom look with a slightly bigger bolt on taillamp, these are the ticket. I bought them for custom projects that went in different directions.

Fits any 1969-1978 Z50 and CT70 K0's..

$35 plus applicable shipping.

I dont know for certain but the headlight base is most likely bigger. You could rip the socket out of any old MC turn signal that uses 2 filaments. You might have to grind the old socket out of the taillight. You can buy sockets at an auto parts store too.

EDIT : There you go ^^^^^^^^^ Dans got the ticket !

So the US market tailights didnt have a dual pole socket? The second picture shows two lead coming from the tail light. Wouldnt it need three? I dont mind an oversized light and long as it gets the job done.

I might take you up on one of those at the end of the week.

On a side note. Do you know what the blue and grey wires from the stator are for?

The US spec taillamps are twin pole as well. That's what I used on my Z50A.

Can't help you on the stator wires as I haven't had a 6V bike in 15 years. I rip out and convert to 12V with all the electrical goodies.

Well I have the stock tailight, so would I still need your tailight to make it work? Sorry if Im being redundant on my questions but as you can see Im no electrician

Update: correct me if Im wrong here. If the tail light I have now will work then the brake switch will be wired in line with the second filament and ground will ground through the socket and SPRESTO BINGO WE HAVE A BRAKE LIGHT?

The stock one you have will work. However, $35 for an OEM brand spanking new Finnish Honda unit is a cool custom touch if you are interested in that sort of thing.

Correct. Just get a 1969 CT70 taillamp bulb if your current 6V bulb has a single filiment.
