| Can A Split Muffler be Repaired?
Hello, I have been enjoying my 72' z50 for a few weeks, and as I start to plan out the steps in the eventual restoration I have been going over the bike and taking stock of the kind of shape everything is in. One problem that I noticed is that the muffler has split right at the seam. This split is at the top, is about 3 inches long, and it is in a spot that you really can't see unless the seat is removed. It is not that the bike is loud with the split, but it does allow exhaust to leak out. The metal seems to be in good shape, but as I am sure you all know, it is very thin. Has anyone had this issue before, and if so, can this type of thing be repaired? If so I am guessing that it would need to be brazed, as the metal is so thin that trying to weld it would vaporize it. Thanks in advance for any help. |

Cool. How much do you want for it? I am guessing that it is just the muffler part? Not the guards/protectors and such? Let me know. |

If I understand what the split looks like, I think you could just weld it shut. Because you describe it as a line so a bead of weld should fix it. give it some sort of coating to stop it from rusting and you are set to go.

you can probaly weld it , just have to use a low heat and some .024 wire and then just use small tack welds starting out about 1/2 inch apart and then letting it cool and going back a little bit at a time and adding more tack welds untill it's fully seamed together. I've welded a bunch of stock pipes on Z's and CRF's and you just have to be carefull about not getting too much heat in one area and you'll be fine. but honestly you should be able to find a used pipe on here in good shape for less than what a shop would charge you to weld that one ( that is if you don't have a MIG at your disposal ) |

I work for a manufacturing company that does extensive fabrication, so there are some welders here who are incredibly good. I can bring it in and have one of those guys take a shot at it and see what they can do. I just wanted to get some thoughts from the experts here on this board before I went to the trouble of bringing it in.
