Lower forks were bent by previous owner. I found a parts bike, the forks were mint. I took the left side off fine. After I took the bolt off from the top, the whole fork slid right out. The left side is not sliding out. It looks like the plastic sleeve that slides on the fork has crack, and is not letting me pull it out. I have hammered the crap out of the thing, trying to get it loose. Any other suggestions? |

I just learned what snap rings are. Thank God my neighbor had snap ring pliers. What a PITA. Now onto removing the steel pin dowel...of which I will have to re-use....is this bad?

The best way to remove the drift pin is to take a small nail the same size as the pin, file the pointed end flat, and use it as a punch to drive the pin out.

make sure when you put the pin back in it's flush with the fork tubes.

I just had to do this to my xr50 forks to get no slop bushings in and omg... your right its a PITA.. i didn't even have snap ring pliers i used needle nose pliers that were pretty pointy enough to fit in those little holes.. lol. I rushed it and ended up damaging my fork tube with a screw driver and my bushings were scraping REAL hard on the fork tubes... i just set the forks in a vice and pumped them back anf forth untill the fork tube bushings were worn in and there was no more scraping.. lol

Well, I got everything apart and back together...only to realize I forgot to put the F***ING dust boots on !! AHHHHHHHHHHHHH. Forks are now working great, all newly lubed...no more bent lower forks...but I need to take everything apart again. Since I'm going to be disasembling everything..what is worth replacing....its all covered in grease so I can't tell whats good or not. |
