Carb mounting on the RIGHT side - hardtail/BMW R11 project pix

I really didn't want my carb sticking out perpendicular to the engine on the left side - it just somehow looks misplaced.

I decided to mount it on the right - and it's really pretty easy since I am not going to have an "up" exhaust pipe to get in the way.

In order to make room for the top of the carb you'll need to to remove the 6V coil where it fits under the gas tank and mount it remotely. In my case I'm converting to a 12V that came with my Lifan 110 that has a really long spark plug lead.

I used the 12 position mounting plate and a left turnout manifold - except rotated it more counter clockwise so than the carb now sticks out at about a 30 angle from center line. In my opinion much better looking and still plenty of room to mount an air cleaner without the whole unit sticking out. More of a "tucked in" look. I used the insolator farther back in the assembly instead of mounting it low to keep heat from traveling to the carb body. I'll probably fab up a heat deflector plate under the bottom to keep the carb bowl from getting hot as well.

The top of the carb now resides in the indentation on the bottom of the stock tank with enough clearance to run the cable under the tank and along the top of the frame's backbone. Once again a bit cleaner look.

Pix below show it all.

Why didn't you just do a 30 degree angle on the left. Chances are that the air filter is going to hit the pipe.

If you take a second and actually READ my post grasshopper you'll see that your questions have already been answered in the first two sentences of my post.

You would have to mount the carb at a 90 degree angle on the left side since the tank is in the way - like THIS:

I know and I'm saying since you have that 12 way plate u can turn it so it's coming out on an angle to the left.

Can't be done since the top of the carb body will hit the tank.

You can either mount it to the left or right at a 90 degree angle, or tuck the top of the carb in under the indentation under the right side of the tank and mount it 30 degrees.

Mounting on the left at 30 degrees can't be done since the carb is way too tall.

O I guess I don't get how the gas tank is higher on the right side of the bike.

Ya' know I haven't measured it but that sounds right... here's what I got from DrATV, time to do some match porting, I think my Dremel can handle it. If not I know a local guy that does work even a dentist would be proud of. Everything in there from the head to the carb is a mess. Once it's cleaned up it should flow really well.

Yep, nothing like genuine BMW roundels on a Honda!

BLASPHEMY!

I owned an '87 5 series (first wife got that one) and now a K1200LT motorcycle. Might be time for a NEW M3. (drool)

Ha! I have an M3 and a couple of E30 convertibles, and I do track events all the time. I use the Z50's as pit bikes, and I'm about to build a beater '69 frame to use exclusively at the races. My M3 is Artic silver, and I'm thinking about painting the Z50 Arctic with black wheels. I have a couple of old E30 roundels hanging around, and I mentioned to Aimee that they would fit on a K0 tank.

I thought I was being original.

The roundels I have are metal badges, and they're a bit too large, but they'll look excellent on the Z.

Are you in a series, or do you do DE's? What kind of M3 do you have?

I bought mine at our local motorcycle dealer - they are very thin - not like the bigger and more expensive badges - so they fit flush and inside the depression on the tank, and have a VERY aggressive peel and stick adhesive on the back. By depressing the female mounting tangs on the tank they fit great. I've also got a smaller one designed for helmets to put on the back of my seat. I've only got some scotch tape on there currently. I paid $17.00 for all three.

I'm a long way off before I mount them permanently - its probably the LAST thing I'll do.
