Carb needed for a 1992 z50r

Hi there,
I'm not very mechanically inclined and have no idea how to rebuild a carb, I was wondering whats the best carb for the money to fit my stock 1992 z50r and where to get it from ? Also what type of oil should i use when doing oil changes?

Before answering that, what's the story with your current stock carb? If you have it, it's likely that fixing it will be the easiest and most appropriate solution for a stock motor...I'll take a look at my 88-89 Z manual and see what the oil recommendation was in those years...

The carb is awfully boggy and sputters and leaks a lot of gas out of the drain valve especially when you shut the bike off and park it

Re: Carb needed for a 1992 z50r

Did it get this way after someone tinkered with it? Because otherwise about all I ever see go wrong with Honda fuel systems is they get gummed up from sitting or they accumulate enoug dirt/water to run like crap until they're cleaned out.

I'd clean the thing if you mailed it to me, and paid for postage and any needed parts, but I've taken some seriously old and neglected and sludged-up Honda carbs of various sizes apart after yeeeeeeeaaaaarrrrrs in the barn full of old fuel, and after a good thorough disassembly and cleaning they worked fine. Probably only elbow grease needed, unless...

it's not carburetor after all, or someone was ill-advisedly jacking about with it and the jacking about caused the probs. Please describe any and all recent jacking about, paying particular attention to such jacking which might have occured just prior to the bike running like a large bag of wank.

LMAO! Too funny Mexi!

It's a Z50. Go buy yourself a qt. of Valvoline VR 20-50 for $2.50. Takes 28 oz. Change it when its dirty. Pretty simple.

Re: Carb needed for a 1992 z50r

The guy i bought it from is said he took it apart and cleaned it up.......he was a legit motorcycle mechanic.........he said he might have bent some plastic thing to do with the float when putting it back together......if the float wasn't set right........that would cause the gas to come out of the overflow drain tube ..............and cause it to run bad?

There ya go, the float level is off... way off! No point buying another carb when you can fix this one, or have someone do it for you.

Here is how you do it, not the same bike, but the concept is.

This should help. Again, not the same carb, but the same idea.

How to set float height

Well i took the carb off and messed w/the float assembly, it seems to run smoother, however still leaks a lot of gas out of the over flow tube

Re: Carb needed for a 1992 z50r

You might need a float needle and seat; that would be the pointy-nosed thing the float pushes up into the little recessed brass opening, which should be removable by a screwdriver slot or hex on the end.

Although the only trouble I've ever had with Honda float needles and seats was that they got crusty and stuck shut, so even when the float would drop they would stay shut and not flow enough fuel...

I'm inclined to think your float height is too high, still. Or somehow the float is hanging up in there and not floating right. Hollow floats sometimes develop leaks and get some fuel in them so they don't float or don't float high enough, but I'd think on a later model like yours it would be a rigid foam float of some kind?

Re: Carb needed for a 1992 z50r

the float tab is plastic, it is a hollow float, I don't think there is much adjustment that can be done........i guess i will just have to deal w/the gas for now, as long as it is running good. I'll keep my eyes open for a cheap float assembly: eBay Motors: MIKUNI 24MM CARB CARBURETOR AIR FILTER CRF XR 50 CRF50 (item 260300651364 end time Nov-13-08 1659 PST)

would this carb bolt on directly and function properly or would i have a bunch of headaches

Re: Carb needed for a 1992 z50r

The stock carb is like 11mm or 13mm; 24mm is WAY too big for a stock 50. Have you priced the float? I'd think it would be reasonable and available for that recent a model.

Re: Carb needed for a 1992 z50r

i found a float assembly at re-mix.com for $30.95 includes float, float valve and needle, does that sound reasonable? I've seen a few mikuni carbs on ebay for about $40. but none are small enuff.

Re: Carb needed for a 1992 z50r

That seems reasonable, sure. I'd check at whatever your local Honda dealer is too, just to compare, but fixing the conservatively sized stock carb is the way forward for you if you're bike's a stock 50cc one.

A larger carb would be good once you had some motor mods, but if you're not right on the verge of doing that it's certainly worth fixing the stock one.
