Chronic loose chain

My street legal Z50 chain always loosens up on me.Last night installed my Daytona rear wheel, got the chain maybe just a bit on the tight side, and went for a nice long ride. When I got home the chain seemed to be loose again. It would do the same thing when I was running the stock rear wheel, with and without the AC swing arm.Should I buy a better quality chain?I use the chain tensioners and alway get the rear wheel good and tight.I don't remember what brand of chain I'm running.Should I buy a D.I.D. or something? It doesn't seem to be hurting anything, but it annoys me.

Re: Chronic loose chain

Ive been running CZ chains on most my minis. They are a bit stiffer then most of the other chains out of the market. They seems to take some serious beatings with out much wear at all.

Re: Chronic loose chain

I bought a used chain and mine does the same thing, hahaha... I have a chain roller too so it's not too bad loose, but I know what you mean. My DID chains never did that so I'll probably pick up a new chain soon.

Re: Chronic loose chain

Before I crank down on the axle, I put a rag between the chain and sprocket and rotate the wheel. This brings the wheel tight against the adjusters and prevents it from lossening later. Once the axle has been tightened, rotate the wheel back and remove the rag. It takes a while to get used to this because it makes your chain looser than you thought. But once you adjusted it correctly it should stay that way. And once you tighten the axle, snug up the adjusters again. I've had them come loose and fall out on the road before.

Hey arlindsay, are you saying the axles are moving? Cause if you are, that's not what's happening on my bike. Not sure about patmans. My chain actually loosens without the axle moving.

Re: Chronic loose chain

Well, if your chain is coming loose, it's either a cheap chain, or your motor is too strong. I wouldn't rule out the axle moving because a very slight movement of the axle can translate to a lot of chain slack. Also are you sure you are adjusting the chain correctly? If it's too tight, when the suspension compresses the chain will become SO TIGHT that wheel and countershaft bearings can be damaged.

Here's an article to about how to adjust the chain correctly. Remove the space in the URL. The Admins won't let me link to Thumper Talk.

Re: Chronic loose chain

If your chain keeps stretching its either a crap chain or you have it adjusted wrong to begin with. When a chain 'stretches' its not the actually stretching the chain, its developing slop around every pin in the chain. So if you have the chain slightly too tight, it will stretch the chain from pulling it too tight when the suspension compresses. To see if you have a worn out chain just take it off and see how much side to side play it has, as well as front to back. (pushing and pulling on the links to see if theres any play) If your chain is worn then go out a buy a good D.I.D.

Re: Chronic loose chain

I have run gold chains on everything since I began updating my motors above 88cc because the same thing happened all the time. Once I put on a real heavy duty chain, it never happened again.

Case in point...I took a brand new, non HD DID chain and slapped it on my CT70 with a TB108 motor in it. And guess what...its doing it again. I'm going to have to go get me a heavy chain. I think a stocker style chain is good up to 88cc...after that, better open up your wallet just a pinch more.

Re: Chronic loose chain

Even the normal gold chain behaves like elastic if you let a 140cc or more loose on it. Better go for the motocross 420 chains. like did nz, regina rx3 and such.

Re: Chronic loose chain

Have you guys had luck with Primary Drive chains? I know the quad guys love them and they'll stretch chains more than a dirt bike will. That's what I'll be getting when I replace my stock chain. But my motor is also stock.
