Clutch Problems

Just put my 1980 z50 back together. The bike runs great, the only problem I am having is when I put it into gear, the bike allmost does a wheely. It goes into gear quite agressively. When I can get it going it shifts through all the gears fine. I tried to adjust the clutch, I loosened the bolt but I couldn't budge the adjuster screw. Any ideas?

Re: Clutch Problems

Is your idle RPM really high? If it is, it is going to BANG into gear and lurch hard. If it isn't, a stock 50 honda shouldn't wheelie when you engage first....unless you have a big bore, carbed, piped and cammed engine....

Re: Clutch Problems

Hey ar, I don't know how much you know about these auto clutch setups, but I adjusted my Z50A clutch like you show in your video. I tried all the way from dead on where I feel tension to backing it off 1 whole turn. No matter where i adjust it the bike still will take off if I rev it above like 6-7k rpm in gear with the shifter held down. The bike also stalls out if i try to idle in gear. I am thinking it might be a problem with the disengagement system? should i just yank it apart clean it up and reassemble it or what?

monkey: how do you have the same problem? did you try using the clutch? lol

Adjust the set screw under the chrome cover to when you feel the slightest resistance, then back it off a tiny bit. Then adjust the cable slack to when you have about 1/8 inch of free play at the lever.

Of course if you let the clutch out at 6k rpm it's going to jerk forward. It would do that whether the clutch was adjusted correctly or not. But just in case you did it wrong. Loosen the lock nut, turn screw clockwise(CW) about 1 full turn or until it stops turning, then turn counter-clockwise(CCW) until you feel the slightest resistance then STOP. Now turn it CW a tiny amount. Maybe 1/16 of a turn. Then tighten the lock nut again.

Re: Clutch Problems

i mean it takes off even while im holding the shifter down. my other bike i can rev to 9k rpm while the shifter is held down without it moving an inch. i will try setting it to 1/16 of turn off again.
