couple pics from todays ride 9-13-08

So we expected 5 but ended up with 3. Just Pete, Greg and I.

It was good times.

Greg and i started off the day with a mad man rush of swapping out the ape motor for the 115. In the nick of time we had it all shaked down and ready to go. all but the oil cooler brackets.

Here are just about the only pics i took. I believe Greg and Pete possibly have some others.

Greg, pleasure to meet you. Let's set up another ride next week. I had a blast on today's ride. Redwood Rd. absolutely rocked.

I'm sure I already posted these but hey, what the heck.

I'm down with next weekend. I'm pissed we didn't get video. I figured out what was up with the helmet cam and it is all good now.

Re: couple pics from todays ride 9-13-08

I was stressing out the last half of Redwood because I thought I was close to running out of gas. Thats why I was riding kind of slow. Checked the tank when I got home and it had about 1/4 tank left (doh!)

Brad - Engine looks most excellent. Heidenau's are going to fit that bike like a glove..

Well FastMC, its a comfy bike really, stock suspensions too soft for the back rd twisties but just fine for cruising around town and smacking a few pot holes. Brakes are non existent but that’s fine as I hardly use them in the twisties, but for hooliganism and city riding I would really like a disk setup. pegs are far too low, I was dragging them in very early on in the day and i ended up having to slow my pace down because of it.

Seating position is pretty nice, ide say it would be the perfect bike to teach someone to ride on.

Re: couple pics from todays ride 9-13-08

Brad is being humble, he was pretty damn fast in the twisties to the point I did not want to push it farther. I looked at my tires when I got home and the wear pattern was about as far as it could go yet Brad clearly had a little something more in the turns.

Re: couple pics from todays ride 9-13-08

Question:

When you guys were riding, could the ZB keep track with the Ape?
What would be the topspeed of that Ape (what are the specs of the engine btw?)

Currently, my Dax is finished, but I think it is to pretty to drive it on daily (see picture). So I'm looking for a new town motorcycle that is fast, little and can have a Takegawa dry clutch... Would you recommend a Ape for that?

What's the point of building a bike and have it too nice to ride? Ride the Dax and if it needs a repaint after a couple of years, who cares! It's a bike, not a Monet...

A Kitaco DOHC with a Dry Clutch in an ape will get you around town just fine. Think of the Ape as the replacement for the Dax from Honda.

I couldn't agree more. The one thing that I love about this bunch is the near museum quality creations I see being built (mine is certainly NOT one of them) actually get ridden regularly.

All that being said . . .

Damnit Pietermann, that is one fine looking DAX!!!

A properly setup ZB with suspension tuned for the rider would smoke my APE how it is right now. its currently all stock other then the motor which is out of a XR100 motard fitted with a Takegawa 115 and dry clutch. The gearing is all off still, not sure what its top speed is right now as it runs out of room on the speedo in 3rd. Its still way too tall on the gearing even so im guessing its probably good for 70mph when geared correctly.

I was also hesitant to keep it up in the RPMs for too long as i didnt have time to make some brackets for the oil cooler. Took care of that yesterday so next time im out on it ill try and have a real speedo and some better gearing. Maybe some real tires.

Is you electrical complete or does the Dax not route out the plug on the right side? I see the plug with no wireharness?

I agree with others, while your Dax is nice, there is no such thing as too nice to ride.

It's the same motor as an XR100, just filled with aftermarket goodies.

Re: couple pics from todays ride 9-13-08

i might be out of place saying this, but that ape needs white piping on the seat and a hugger front fender badddd. hugger rear fender wouldnt hurt either. motor looks bad ass tho. bikes all looked good. what type of cruising speeds were you guys seeing?
