Cracked Case :(

I was cleaning up my engine case today to prep it for painting and what I first thought to be some casting slag looks to be a crack. Before tearing it down, I ran the motor long enough to verify that it still shifted through the gears ok and I didn't notice any oil leaking from the area with the crack. It's just behind the counter sprocket shaft in the left side case and it's hard to see the whole thing because of the camera flash. But it runs all the way across the case to the center where the case halves meet.

I've got another engine, but the tranny shifts really rough. So my only option short of another motor is to move the internals from the motor in the picture to the cases with the bad tranny or find another bottom end.

I'm looking for opinions. Would you guys run it with the crack or start a major teardown?

Fiddy of the Month

JB Weld it and ride the piss out of it. IF it gets worse replace it. Most likely though it will be fine.

My mate had a nice crack behind his kickstart leaver... it leaked when it got hot... He just filled it up with some gearbox gasket silicon stuff and never looked back.. Fix or replace if it starts to spread and open up otherwise id just keep on riding. IMO

It looks like the votes are in. I'll button everything up as is and see how it goes. Thanks for the feedback.

My Mood: Cool
Its a cold lap in the casting, part of the material cooled down and then some hotter material seeped thru after while they were still pouring the mold. It shouldnt be a problem.

I had a spot on my ATC70 cases that looked like that. I sanded it out to make sure it wasn't a crack. It disappeared after a while.
