CrawlerD's hardtail build...

Off the bat I have to say I have taken some "inspiration" from Razzomoto. And with his permission, I have wanted to do a ratrod for awhile and here is my attempt.
It started as this.

And had my frame and fork powdercoated flat black/

And my tank. I had a hard time finding a pinstripe man and I found Bob Beam (guy who does Tony Stewart and Robby Gordon's helmets) and he did a really nice job.

The details: keep em comin. Looks pretty cool. Eventually you're going to have to talk about exhaust, which is my favorite part.

Re: CrawlerD's hardtail build...

Glad to inspire you Dave! You old flatter'r you! Nice pin's on the tank. We're going to have twins!

I'll tell you what, people love that "rat rod" look. Had mine at the AMA Vintage Days. Can't tell you how many people took pictures of it. Even the purists liked it!! Take mine every year to a street rod meet at Atco Dragway and cruise around. Rodders love it. Have had its picture taken along side many a street rod.

Don't forget the whitewalls!!!!!!! Gotta roll on the wide whites bro!

Re: CrawlerD's hardtail build...

Okay, while we are on the topic of white walls. I have never had a set of tires come off cleaner than these! I will have to post pics.
Definately doing white walls. I know, I know, some of you hate them. I dont care! Dont post it here. It's my thread and on this build it's got to have em. Here are the ones I think I will use. 3.50 in front and 4.00 in the rear.
Shinko SR550 White Wall Front - Rear Tire - Scooter - Tires - Motorcycle Superstore

I am torn on the wheels though. I think I will polish the hubs and powder the wheels red. I have thought about black too.
Concerns are the bolts. You have to powder those too or it looks weird and then putting together is a nightmare without tearing the powder off. Could ceramic coat the rims and powder the hubs. But I think with the white walls the colored rims will look better.
Any thoughts?

Re: CrawlerD's hardtail build...

Do they make Halibrands or Empis in an 8" size?

I think the whitewalls look cool on these retro-themed builds. You know those little oval bugcatchers you used to see on the multi-stromberg intake setups in the old V8s? Sometimes painted red on the inside and angled this way and that? I wonder if you could put one of those on a Mikuni, with the manifold run out the side and the bugcatcher facing forward. Then run a zoomie for exhaust and a very small Moon tank as an oil puke tank.

Or hit Z up for one of his trick vintage Tillotson carbs.

Sorry. I got a little carried away.

Re: CrawlerD's hardtail build...

Didn't see your vote on the wheels Ben.
Oh def have to have a trick vintage Tillotson carb!!! Not too many old outboards around here! I bet it's cause all the mini guys are running that sweet carb!!!
Guess I could just run the whole out board motor! Haha

Re: CrawlerD's hardtail build...

air filter ideas, although the 2-5/8" Stromberg air horn diameter might require a little fabrication to make an adapter:

Mr Stromberg scoops, velocity stacks, air cleaners

And never be afraid to substitute red oxide primer color for any other color.

Re: CrawlerD's hardtail build...

Red wheels Dave. That is also the same tire combo I run. I went with the Conti's. That 4.00-8 will the back up nicely.

Powdercoat the wheels. Just use flat washers on both sides. Won't break the powder and will look good.

Please, I have been envisioning this bike since it was first mentioned but haven't seen pics yet.

Nice start to your project, nice to have more custom ratrod hardtails out there although I'm sure both of your bikes look much better and nicer than mine.

Those are old pictures on the website. Here's the updated "Rat Rod". New lights, Conti's. I built this Z over 5 years ago.
