| CT70 guru's...look here please!
I have a 71' CT70H that I just put a CHP stator/point replacement kit in. The bike has not ran in years and I really don't know the history of it. After I replaced the complete ignition with the CHP kit the bike started and ran but it wouldn't run on top end. I rode it around for about 20 minutes and then parked it for an hour or so. When I came back to start it again I had no fire and I had to swap the new CHP condensor with the original honda condensor. After that it started again but still wouldn't run on top end. The instructions with the kit said to gap the points between .2-.3mm. The bike ran terrible like that and I changed it to .1mm. It ran better like that but still wants to pop and sputter when you try to hold the bike wide open. The carb was also just rebuilt so I don't think it is a carb issue. It seems like it's out of time but I don't really think there is any adjustment past the points. The bike starts right up and idles fine but runs terrible on top end. I have spent hours messing with it and I would appreciate it very much if anyone has any insight into this problem...thanks. Here is the kit that I put in: http://hondaminitrail.com/gifs/164.jpg |

Timing could be off a tooth? Bad gas? Gummed up jets (never hurts to take a look and check)

Well I finally got the bike running properly tonight. I had to come up with my own timing mark about halfway between the F and T mark. I think that is just because the motor is old and the components have some wear on them. I used a timing light and got it dialed in. I thought that somebody would know exactly what to do because I always see so many vintage CT70's on this forum but no luck. I found a great website that covers just about every aspect of motorcycle maintenance and it really helped me get this dialed in. You guys should bookmark it just in case you ever need any info. It even has spec charts for just about all bikes. Motorcycle Repair Course |
