My Mood: | dumb question about noise level....
I now have a 1975 z50k6 running as well as a 1969 z50k1. The k1 is much louder than the k6. Is that normal or is the exhaust/muffler defective? I've checked it for leaks, but man its loud compared to the k6.

It's normal. Hardtail exhausts are not very effective at muffling the midrange and higher frequencies. Z50R and softtail Z50A-type pipes are much quieter. Really about all that's inside a hardtail muffler is a spiraly vane spark arrestor baffle. A lot of the muffling that takes place, what little there is of it, comes from forcing the exhaust to exit through that skinny little stinger. I have not seen a cutaway of a later-style pipe, but would guess that large chamber allows some expansion room in front of a pretty circuitous and restrictive baffle without choking the engine too much. They sure are quiet. |
