| Fixing up a set of beat z50 wheels PIC
Dont think im cheap lol i just have a mustang id rather throw my money into so im allways trying to come up with ways to do it myself I have been rebuilding my 1970 z50 and doing it on a budget so i thought id share another cheap thing i came up with for redoing the wheels on a z50 without removing the tires cause they are a pain in the arse to get off old rusty wheels sometimes, it only cost 3.99 for the rustolem silver paint i allready had a can of primer and the 100% mineral spirits. and of course the 15 dollar harbor freight spray gun, like my other thread reduce the paint with the spirits enough to make it sprayable. basically strip both wheels of all the hardware and hubs, now i have a sand blaster but no blast cabinet so i buy a bag of play sand from home depot cost like 10 bucks and i use a old piece of screen on top of a bucket and filter the sand threw the screen to get out all the little rocks cause they will clog the gun the sand thats left works great for striping and isnt hard on the metal and since its play sand u can just spray it in the back yard and not worry about loosing a blasting media,so i strip the wheels, now i put the wheel on the bench let all the air out of the tube i use masking paper folded and i slide it down between the rim and the tire when you let go of the tire it pinches the paper under the rim and sprayed it with the detail gun. heres the bike i started with ![]() close up of the rim painted and how i papered around the edge, since i used a detail paint gun i didnt have to tape off the whole tire but when i did this before on another bike i used spray paint so i taped off the whole tire ![]() ![]() shot of my progress on my home made stand ![]() |

If your going to do all that, why not replace the fasteners? It never ends... I prefer to take the tire off and treat the rust on the inside. Very nice improvement! |

I used a dremel with a mini wire wheel on all the hardware to clean it up.

Still, from blah to bling in under $5, can't beat it! I'm going to try to restore the hardware when I pull mine down, thinking a few shots under the wire wheel should get me close... maybe a shot of clear to just to keep the shine a little longer. |
