Flywheel cleaning help

Flywheel from a '70 CT70. VERY rusty inside. How should I clean it up? Just some solvent or maybe lightly sand?
Thanks in advance.

Re: Flywheel cleaning help

For rust removal I use stuff called "A must for rust" from my local home depot

Just spray it on, brush in with a tooth brush, let it sit 5 minutes, spray it again, rub it in again, sit 5 minues.. Do that for about 30 minutes, and that'll usually remove all the rust

I did that on my entire Fzr600 frame to paint it

Thanks. BTW anyone know how to get out all the little metal shavings? I'm thinking a stronger magnet to draw them off.

Re: Flywheel cleaning help

I just be patient and get the metal flakes with a paper towel. I don't know if it's possible but I would be worried the stronger magnet might screw with the ignition system. It might not, but I just use a paper towel, then I just take care to keep it clean.

Thanks. This is my first time rebuilding one of these bike engines. I have a manual, but it's short on tips and tricks.

Re: Flywheel cleaning help

I would sandblast it. You probably dont have one, but you could go to a local shop and ask them to do it. It would probably be just as cheap as the rust spray. But if you sandblast it it will look like brand new.

That's not a bad idea. Have to get a little machine work done anyway.
