| frame hacking
hey gents, hope someone can shed a little light on a subject for me... The following question relates to a K3 z50: ***theoretically***** if I was to strip my bike down to the frame only and cut and add a few inches to it (increasing the length of the frame) at about the mid underneath tank area, would there be any advese handling issues. (note: if this were to be done it would be approx 3" addition, and a 3" rear swinger would also be employed......) 2nd side question: I'm based in Australia and am in need of new OEM honda parts for my "restoration". Can anyone recommend a good US supplier that are happy to sell to O/S customers? Cheers Horde... Last edited by horde; 03-04-2008 at 06:03 AM. |

Hi there, its not a major job to do,my brother did one last year and I have put 1 and half " in a z50a this year,on my brothers last year it had 2" put in the head tube and it ran a +16 swinger on it,to add to that it was also lowered 2 and a quater inches,it does affect the handling a bit in the way that its a bit more twitchy but they still corner pretty well, the only problems my bro had was catching his feet on the floor all the time but that was down to it being lowered, will try and get some pics up of it cheers matt |

To answer questions from original post: Handling would be affected in a good way. Longer wheelbase = better handling. I have a +4 swingarm and just that makes the bike handle a lot better. You are suggesting a +3 frame and a +3 swingarm totaling +6 overall. I would say that it would be a lot more stable at speed. For road it would be great. If you are riding trails or track, I would say it's not going to be much better than a +4 swingarm alone. Longer wheelbase is stable, shorter wheelbase is more responsive and turns faster. It's one or the other or a compromise. Just like speed and torque when you work with gearing. I'm not sure on the shipping problem. I'm sure that there are some places that will ship to Aus. E-mail and ask. They might charge extra on top of shipping, might not. Depends on the distributer. There may even be members on here willing to be a middle man and buy from dealer and ship to you. |

Cool, cheers for the info and the pic! The stretching part should be fairly straight forward, im assuming I'll just cut the thing square in half, machine up a piece of pipe approx 7" long, machined at the ends to slide into each end of the frame and then TIG it up. Anyone give me some advice on the better parts people out there? |

that certainly is a sweet bike! My plan is for it to be a little more compact than that, however fit the monster 8" tyres and not have them fowl on the head, swinger, etc As far as parts ordering go, I'm in the works of ordering some bits and pieces from CHP, prices seemed reasonable, relatively quick on the reply emails..... |
