Gasket set for the Z50

Hi 'ya folks,
This is my first post on this forum, however I'm certanly not a nube when it comes to hondas.

With that being said, I have a stupid question.

There are several gasket kits on ebay. The kits are for 69-78 Z50. My little bike is an 82 Z50R. What is the difference? Will most of the gaskets work?

Here is the bike I bought off of ebay.

http://cm.ebay.com/cm/ck/1065-29392-...m=270093119097

The bike actualy runs great. I fixed the throttle cable and temporly put a Suzuki MT50 front wheel on it. Blasted around the yard a few times. (lots of snow still on the ground).

Anyway the bike is covered in layers of paint. I want to clean the engine up and heilcoil a bunch of threads. Aparently somone thought 1/4-20 was a good substitute for metric.

Not really interested in restoring the bike, just clean it up and make it safe. Of course the hillbilly seat has got to go.

So back to the origional question.. will the 69-78 gasket set work on my '82.

I'm interested in clutch cover gasket and the whole top end.

Jim

Hey Jim,,,welcome to the forum. Looks like someone did a few mods to that bike !! Nice front wheel,,,and Preston Petty fenders even. Look here for a gasket kit. This one should work fine:http://www.hondatrailbikes.com/catal...roducts_id=140

Thanks for the links! I went ahead and sent off an email to DRATV.

The front wheel on the little bike was the first thing to go!.. It was actually fixed in position with a chunk of black pipe. No bearings! yikes!

I pulled the engine yesterday and tore down the top end. It looks like the gaskets were re-used a few times. lots of RTV goo.

I cleaned off the crappy paint and polished the head. looks brand new(almost).

Authough the bike ran fairly well, the carburator was full of crap. I have never seen a carb get that dirty and still work.

The custom Preston Petty fender is sitting in the trash anlong with the front wheel. I'll have to locate a decent set of fenders and a seat.

I figure when the weather gets warm enough I strip all the crappy paint and refinish with a good quality automotive paint. I want the bike to be clean and safe, however I dont want to go overboard and do a 100 point restoration.

If you're still wondering about that gasket set, I honestly don't know if there is a difference between the eBay ones that are for earlier models. I think that it could just be the right side head cover gasket because early model cams had larger bearings which made for a different gasket. And it could be because the clutch gasket. But I really don't know. I always get my kits from Beatrice Cycle(DrATV). He always seems to have the best prices for everything and I never question if the part will fit.

I just ordered a set of gaskets from Hondatrailbikes. The kit says it will fit up to 81. Hopefully most of the stuff will fit my '82.

A few years ago I ran into trouble because of my ignorance. I restored a 1976 XR75. I made a lot of mistakes assuming stuff would fit. Eventually I got it sorted out. That was an awesome bike.

As I get older I seem to find the smaller bikes are just pure fun. Sure a 250 or larger class bike would haul my butt more efficiently.. its just not as fun as a 50-75cc bike.
