Help! Rear axle nut -Aw, Son-of-...

Sons-of-Heaven! Lifan CT70 Curse!

Big day for personal firsts - first busted knuckle with grease dressing, first use of unGodly curses since I left active duty, first thrown wrench...

Got in my 17T/34T sprockets and set out to change 'em. Removed the front sprocket cover, wedged a piece of 2x4 strategically, poppped oof the master chain link clip, and change counter sprockets just like that.

"Oh, Boy," I thought, like a chump, this is gonna be a piece o' cake. Or tofu."

But no. Went to loosen the rear axle nut. Noted the big booger of Chinese locktite on it, shrugged, and went to heavin'.

Merciful God, how much torque was applied to this thing? Will NOT budge; beat on the ratchet handle with a ball peen - nada. Many heaves later, the whole thing turned a skosh - but because the loctite glob acts as a witness mark, I could see that it hadn't actually loosened.

Am I missing something? Did the guy in the plant apply his impact wrench and go to lunch leaving it running? Is it staked? Is it pinned? Is it welded?

I apply the tip of a tiny propane torch to the end, trying to heat things a little without drawing the temper. But no.

What am I doing wrong - I must be. I'll go now and change knuckle bandaids and await the kindness of a passing sage...

UPDATE - Threw the tarp over everything and left the field of battle. Typing one-handed now; for though I took up the ball-peen to smite the ratchet handle anew, fury spoiled my aim and I laid open the web of flesh between the thumb and forefinger...Riding off now to get a stitch or two...

Re: Help! Rear axle nut -Aw, Son-of-...

That Sucks. I had the same go round with both of my late 70 ct-70's I have.
I ended up having to use a Impact on both of them. Its a wonder how they didn't just bust the threads off tightening it down that much...

Maybe Lifan just looked at a old ct and said "If theirs were on that tight ours will be too"

Lifan does use some stout thread locker now that's for sure! I knew what I was up against before I did my gear swap, I had the impact ready to go and got the nut it off relatively easy. I did bust a knuckle on the First old Ct though before resorting to using the Impact.

Where are you located? I am in Arlington and know these CT70s and Clones inside and out. When you get that thing street legal, we should go ride.

If you are close, I am sure I could help you get it apart.

Maybe we should set up a Northern Virginia group mini ride...

As for the axle nut, impact wrench, or a longer lever.

Redhand,
Had a trying day, logged on here and lmao. Funny, funny, sorry to laugh at your misfortune, we all have been there. Got pissed the other night threw a screwdriver, ricocheted (sp) and hit and broke brand new Craftsman worklight, shattered into a gazillion pieces and filled every bag, box and open orfice it could find with Halogen shrapmetal/glass. Some of the words I came up with even impressed me! Never have my neighbors heard such going on in their life. Extremely religious guy behind us did not appreciate my verbage! LOL

Re: Help! Rear axle nut -Aw, Son-of-...

Much later that same day...

Thanks, Gents. ER was the usual Dantean limbo, and the questions they ask in triage are more interesting than ever ("Been to Mexico lately? Use any recreational drugs? Do you feel safe in your home environment?"). Says interesting things about modern culture. I liked that last one - means I'm finally old enough to be subject to 'elder abuse'.

Anyway, a student PA put in three stitches. Didn't Mick Jagger do this once for "Rolling Stone"?:

Bruddas, once the rains cease tomorrow a.m., Ah'm own ride the GTS down to Harbor Freight in Woodbridge and get a Chinese inmpact wrench for this Chinese bike, assuming I have sufficient prehensile function to work the brakes. New tools! Woo Hoo!

fatcaaat, I'm just up 29 in Falls Church. The stitches were done at Arlington Hospital (which I refuse to call 'Virginia Medical Center.' I'll shoot ya a pm when I get the tags on't..

dsrt4, I also thought I was gonna be faced with insufficient fastening, but no; once the idea of locktite caught on in the PRC, those dudes really took it to heart..

Hey! Colorful expletives work, Hymie, in stress relief, ; not long ago, I heard a new (to me) one from a younger guy, and put it through field trials about 1:30 today: "Well, Fawkety-fawk McFawkerson!". And it's raining again or I'd be out in the back yard looking for my ball-peen...

Yo! Harbor Freight Impact Wrenches...

Anyone have any experience of the cheap-o (sub-$100) electric Impact Wrenches carried by Harbor Freight?. Will they perform adequately for light, occasional, duty?

When ya need it, ya need it; I don't mind spending a couple big bills for something I'll use all the time, but it would be nice to have one available for the infrequent times I'll need it.

My Father has the harbor frieght electric impact.

It works fine for him. He uses it on wheel lugs on his big tractor and it does the job for him.

Re: Help! Rear axle nut -Aw, Son-of-...

Good to hear. I'll look over the amp ratings and heavy-lifting numbers tomorrow.

Harbor Freight - you can never go in & buy just one thing. Need a new pack of red shop rags anyhow. And a blower. And some tiny ring clamps. And...
