Maybe your bike is running too rich. Mine just starts bogging and without warning dies out when I forget to turn the fuel on.

well my 71 minitrail doesn't do it when it runs out of gas, so i was supposing there was a problem with the '84. and the idle just doesn't get a little higher, it gets to the point where i have to shut off my bike to shift into first or else it'll jump and get out of hand.

well most bikes will idle high as it is running out of gas, getting lean.did you ever think that maybe your 71' has a problem?maybe your petcock leaks and it truly never stops getting gas, just a thought.but it is not a problem for the 84' to idle high when running out of fuel.soem bike are just more noticeable than others for whatever reason.i would bet that if you put an accurate digiatl tachomter on the 71' the idle would go up as it was running out of fuel, just not as pronounced as the 84',thier are variables to take into account between diff bikes and why there are differences in running lean/out of fuel.some 2 strokes will rev so high you think its going to blow up when running out of fuel

lean condition = high idle. don't worry, it won't idle high for long. Just hold on tight.

alright i guess. i just want it to let it be known that its not just a little higher idle, but like screaming like im almost full throttle and if i just let it sit and keep doing this it seems like it'll blow the **** up

What's the point in shutting off the petcock while it's running, anyway? My minitrail don't have a kill switch, so I just pull off the plug wire. I don't see any sense in closing the petcock, unless I'm missing something.

Why don't you just put more gas in the tank?

okay, let me get this straight. i am just trying to give as much detail as possible about this. and maybe i didnt put in enough detail or word it right, but let me try right now to set it all straight. -when the gas in the gas tank is at any level, even full to the very mo****in top, and the petcock is turned to the "on" position, it idles really high. -when it starts getting low on gas, not like running on fumes low, but just low, it idles really high. i only can run my bike on reserve at all times. and i don't like doing this. i know it's not a big deal but it bugs me and i want to fix it and that's all that matters. so again, does anyone know the problem? thanks. Maybe the fuel inlet for the ON position is clogged so it will only flow slowly. But the reserve inlet is not clogged so it flows fine. To fix this remove the petcock and clean it all out and blow out the passages while adjusting the position of the petcock. Also blow some low pressure air though the filter screen in the tank to make sure it's not clogged up.
