| How hot is too hot?
I am starting to monitor temperatures and would prefer to not run an oil cooler unless I have to. I have googled but am interested in the conventional wisdom specific to minis on what constitutes too hot? 220F, 240F? I'm running GN4 and have not exceeded 200F but it has only been 65-70ish OAT. Thanks, |

greg good synthetic brakes down 400-500 deg f and 230deg is fine and up to 300 deg f for short bursts is ok in mini bike engines, the best thing you can do for mini bike engines is to filter the oil!

| Re: How hot is too hot? Thanks gentlemen, and Ray, I know I am pushing it. I have the taps on the head, I just need to find the right little billet filter! For now I am doing crazy oil changes and running a magnetic plug.

When you say filter the oil how are you suppose to do this in a Honda horizontal shaft motor with no filter?

I used to have a VW passat and the oil temps constantly ran at 232 without any issue. My Takegawa 124+r sees cylinder temperatures of about 188 when cruising and as high as 240 at idle. I can only assume the oil inside is cooler. The highest temp I've recorded on a dipstick thermometer on my mini was 230 after running it 70 mph for 10 straight minutes and then getting stopped at a red light...at the light it was at 230 and I thought nothing of it. I agree with the above post...the best thing you can do for oil is filter it and/or change it often. |

Would a filter be worth it if you change your oil every 8 to 10 hours? and anyone have links of filters on monkey's?

actual oil temps at operating temp should not go above 220. Head temps can get up over 400. i had a bike that got up to 500!! If you are on it hard for a decent amount of time then it will go up only during that time and should drop right away. If it doesnt your oil isnt doing its job. But reading oil temp is a much better way to tell when your oil is no longer doing its job efficiently. |
