How to Prep a z50 frame for powder coating

Hey everybody, I want to powder coat my z50 frame and I have phoned up a few places, as I dont have a sand blaster at home they said all I had to do was stick bolts in the threaded holes.

Here are my questions

if I just stick a bolt through and it powder coated, now how do I remove the bolt if the thread on the other side has been covered?

What tips and tricks do you guys use when preping a frame for powder coating.

What do I do with the head stem, I was thinking of a metal plate on each end with some threaded thing and nuts holding it all together.

When you powder coat two metal parts and seperate them after it has been baked what happens?? Do they come apart easily or do you ruin them.

I have never powdered coated anything before and want this to come out perfect.

A good will powder coating place will want to prep the frame themselves to be able to stand behind the finished product. They will blast the item, prep the threaded holes, races and such with heat resistant tape. If they won't, don't use them. You will get back a big headache if they do it. Powder coat is a bitch to remove. I have a powder coater here in N.J. who is excellent. Will prep and coat at reasonable prices. All colors and textures. Pm me if interested.

you really shouldn't have to put bolts in the threaded holes as they should have the silicone plugs and caps already. i've done maybe 200 parts in my oven and usually don't even plug the holes and they are fine. you could wire-wheel any rust and paint off, but it would still need cleaned and thats if it does not flash rust on ya.

crappy seat pan i had to retro fit, and coated.

Dont powder coat without bolt in the treads or caps. I had a power coater do this on one of my banshee frames and i had to tap every thread. BIG PAIN! Caps are the best. if you put your bolts in the frame they will end up powdered coated also, making a socket almost impossible to use. you will end up tossing the bolts, cleaning the powder coat off will take hours and hours. Take your time and go over every part.

Thanks for all the tip guys, I found my sand blaster and started on all the parts that I want powder coated. here is a list below

frame
swing arm
forks
rims
hubs

its all coming along nicely and I think I have found a good powder coater in Melbourne Australia that will look after me. Here are some pics below of the sand blasted frame and other parts.

The plan is to get the bike to look some thing like this. I really like the black rims on it.

Powder coating can't be beat for durability.

For me, a primer coat followed by several coats of glossy black Krylon looks just great. The trick is to use one of the plastic snap on triggers on the can so you can control the spray. 3 cans of spray paint, $12.00. Plastic trigger, $3.00. One hour of time. Ready to assemble the next day.
