how a takegawa thermostat bolt works

just wanted to put up a short vid of who a takegawa thermostat bolt works inside the special clutch.when your oil heats up to 70-80' the spring opens up to let hot oil flow into the oil cooler.
i used slightly cooled boiled water for the test so you could see how the spring opens up to let hot oil into the oil cooler.

Great info. I added this to the Z50 Technical Section Sticky.

Check with the Takegawa vendors to see if they have them onhand. I got mine when I ordered the crate motor. Make sure you get the gold one, as the blue one only fits the first generation of Diecast clutch covers that were made for a very short period of time. 99% of the people running those have the clutch covers that take the gold bolt.

The thermostat is a great idea. I have an old cover and it does not have the provision for the thermostat.

You can always use an inline thermostat.

Re: how a takegawa thermostat bolt works

VERY cool. Here's a question...when you run an oil cooler, I assume you are supposed to run a higher oil level to compensate for the oil in the cooler and lines. With this thermostat, you would technically be running with an overfilled oil level until the t-stat opens up, correct? I assume it's fine, as Takegawa usually has things nailed down...just a thought that came to mind. Any insight?

Re: how a takegawa thermostat bolt works

There will still be oil in the cooler, unless you have one that can drain completely down.

Yeah, I guess the amount that goes back into the engine would be negligible. So, here's another question...what's the advantage of running a t-stat as opposed to open all the time? Is it a matter of heating the engine up faster? Is it an oil pressure issue?

Re: how a takegawa thermostat bolt works

You can overcool an engine. You want your engine to get up to operating temp as quickly as possible. If you run a thermostat, I would recommend having the oil cooler so the lines are at the top so all the cooler oil doesn't drain back into the engine.

Your opinion may differ.

Active makes a really cool anodized thermostat as does a couple of other JDM companies. However, the pieces are rather ridiculous in price, but do come with the Earl's swivelseal fittings which is probably jacks the price up by 30% since the fittings aren't cheap.

I have a pic of the active unit in this thread.

the trick is to fill the cooler with oil and than install it

Re: how a takegawa thermostat bolt works

well even with the t-stat closed the rest of the oil would still be trapped in the cooler, you will still have some old oil in the cooler while/when you change the oil. also there is a cooling additive you can add to your oil which from what i can tell adds more thermal conductivity to the oil.

Re: how a takegawa thermostat bolt works

Also, most of the inline thermostats still allow 10% or so flow to the cooler even when shut. Not sure on the Tak piece. Not changing the little bit in the cooler shouldn't be an issue, if the filter's doing it's job and the oil is swapped regularly.
