You need to remove the flywheel and stator plate, as well as the round cam cover and the bolt holding the idler wheel in the jug. I think you can do it without pulling the head.

Re: instaling a new timing chain

I managed to replace a stretched cam chain without pulling the head once. Lay the bike on the right side and you don't need to drain the oil. Just pull the flywheel and stator plate, then remove the cam sprocket cover. After that it's just a lot of fishing.

A video I made specifically about setting the cam timing.

Yes there is a special puller. It is possible to take it off without one but not worth your effort. Buy the tool.

You CAN remove the flywheel without a puller but it basically requires you to beat the outside of the flywheel with a hammer repeatedly. There are two risks to this approach 1.) You could crack the flywheel or 2.) It is possible to demagnetize the inner rotor by striking it. If this happens then your flywheel is junk.

Here's the link to buy a tool that will remove your flywheel...
