Interesting Z50 Ebay Auction

I love these kind of ebay auctions.

eBay Motors: HONDA Z50 MINITRAIL COLLECTION 67-70 (item 180155729232 end time Sep-13-07 19:00:00 PDT)

I've spoke to Jerry on the phone in the past, but other then that, I don't know him from adam. Razzo probably knows him personally. Seemed like a nice guy when I spoke to him on the phone over a year ago. Can't remember why we spoke, as I don't deal in the collector market very often.

However, what's he thinking here? Jerry has always been on the high end of prices when selling his NOS and other parts, but $32K for 5 bikes?

The M is worth about $5K to the right buyer maybe $5500 if someone desperately wants it. The rest of the bikes are worth much less then $5K.

For the $32K price tag, that's over $6K per bike

The floor is open for discussion.

Re: Interesting Z50 Ebay Auction

the question is, do you personally think it'll sell?
what kind of demand is out there on the collector side? is it as big as big as the jdm mini bike scene?

i've always looked at his stuff as well and always thought they were on the high side.

There is demand on the collector side for Z50M's, K0's, K1's and K2's, but very few would bring those kind of prices unless you had a motivated buyer.

i've seen this guy's ebay website. i always thought his prices were ridiculous ( although i am not a collector and not very knowledgable on the value of hardtail bikes/parts), but good god, that seems pretty outrageous. i would be interested to see if he actually finds a buyer for this auction

for a correct resto u need some of these parts, like restored seats, everyone knows seats are hard to come buy. id say these prices are fair, its either pay for them or spend the time and wait to look for them.

Re: Interesting Z50 Ebay Auction

I could see me buying those if I were about to be on Cribs or something.. "Yeah, deez be my mintrails I look at when ain't nothin on Mtv, yamean?" LOL Outrageou$..

Jerry has some nice stuff. If he fiddled with K3-78 parts I'd give him business..
Btw Z, Jeff T. deals with him pretty often I think..

Are there any specific shows stateside that people 'regularly' compete Zs in?

Re: Interesting Z50 Ebay Auction

Jerry's prices are very high for the market, but if you are lazy and need something and aren't patient, he'll have it and you'll need to pay the piper.

Where do you think he gets all of his parts he's selling? Same places anyone can get parts.

If you are going to correctly restore a vintage bike, take your time and find parts when they come available, rather then taking the easy route and pay 2-3X their value from someone who bought the parts in the same places everyone else is looking...

That's the biggest mistake people make when trying to do a concours restoration. If you want all the NOS parts, it will take a couple of years to find some of those parts, and luck with others. If you are patient, you'll be able to find what you need without paying out the poop-chute.

This is also why I think collecting and full restoring bikes is a waste of time and effort. Even if your bike is 100% correct, some butthole will come by and tell you you have the wrong type of finish on your bolts and he could have done a better job.

Customize it like you want it, don't play the collector game, and ride it like you stole it.

Couldn't have said it better than that right there.

It's not like production numbers for these bikes are low, anyway

Well, I guess if someone wanted to just have an instant collection this would save all the hassles of searching out all the bikes you want. But I think you are right, this is kind of like selling a used hot rod as not everyone everyone likes what one person does but if the right buyer would come along you would get the figure you wanted (and then some maybe) regardless of what it is worth to others.

Does anyone ever buy from him? I've seen his auctions for a long time now and always thought you would have to be smokin off a spoon to buy from him.

Re: Interesting Z50 Ebay Auction

Yes, Jerry tends to be over the top on prices. I rarely see him selling much too. Wishful think on that Ebay auction I believe. Not many collectors willing to drop that $ a one shot. He would do better selling them one by one.

Customize it like you want it, don't play the collector game, and ride it like you stole it.

It nice to enjoy both sides like I do Dan. Nice original bikes will bring high prices in the right venue. This isn't it. I enjoy restoing Z's and modding them. Modding more! Original will always be worth more that a custom. It is like that in cars and bikes. It captures a moment time. Nothing like looking at a beautiful 35 yr.old bike and admiring it, its original paint, thinking about where its been, who rode it, how it lasted all this time. A bike/car is only original ONCE. Anyone can resto something. Not all nos parts are correct either. It is just to the correct level that takes talent.

A modded bike will only be worth the sum of its parts. Look at all the CRF's on Ebay and here for sale with huge price tags. Part them out. You will make more of your cash back. People try to recover the money they put out for a custom. Not happening. Customs are personal taste. What one guy thinks is cool, is land fill to another. Build a custom for YOU. Then ride it like you stole it.

Re: Interesting Z50 Ebay Auction

Do people really build these bikes to make $$? If anyone is worried about resale on one of these bikes while they are sinking cash into it, they are in the wrong hobby!

A month ago I just passed up on 2 zero mile ZB50's sold as a pair. They are probably still for sale. Who wants 2 bikes collecting dust with the hopes and dreams they will be valuable in the future? They were priced good as well. Never seen gas in the tank, and have lived indoors in a climate controlled basement. The original owner bought them in a crate. Pass!

This is why I sourced a NOS ZB tank, stripped it, and custom painted it for my currect project. It sure feels good... I love picking up NOS parts and customizing them for bike builds... I can hear the purist market shrieking

I've been that route and sold my collector bikes going on 4 years now, and there's a feeling of freedom knowing I can take out any bike in my garage, beat the crap out of it, and stick it back in the garage and not having to worry about the bikes losing value.

It's a hobby for cripes sake, not my investment portfolio!

Re: Interesting Z50 Ebay Auction

You got that right! You will never get rich collecting bikes! I do know what you mean about purists. I am not one as see from my bikes. I have tortured quite a few in my time at meets. "How could you paint it that color!! ah...with a spray gun. Some of them do tend to get a bit tight about it. They don't understand how I have customs and originals. They need to lighten up a bit. Your right it is a hobby. When it stops being fun, give it up.
