Probably needs a new top end, you're losing compression, and it also sounds like you need to clean the carb thoroughly.

or adjust the air screw and idle. But clean the carb jets first and look for air leaks, then i would adjust the air screw and throttle screw. compress sounds alittle far fetched, does if feel hard to kick? And you said it runs normal once you warm it up.

a new spark plug couldn't hurt but if its not bad then its not going to help. Cleaning the carb is just step on, you need to get certain steps out of the way before trouble shooting problems. You just can't go random at it becuase you will be running around in circles. If it doesn't start on the first kit you don't do something like rebuild the engine, you start with the basics, clean the jets, check for air leaks, adjust the carb, check the spark plug, MAKE SURE THIER IS GAS IN THE ENGINE, you would see how many friends I have helped where they were out of gas and taking apart the whole stupid bike. Baby steps.

Nobody said anything about a clean carb making your bike warm up any faster at all. A clean carb working properly (which includes the choke mechanism being used) will make your bike easier to start, due to the fact that it is getting the proper amount of fuel to fire up. When you have worn piston rings, you are losing compression, and when you have to kick it over 20 times to get it started, that's a good sign of low (or poor) compression. A poorly adjusted (or dirty) carb, along with low compression, makes any bike a pain to start. You can buy an XR/CRF piston, rings, and cylinder for a song on eBay, they are a dime a dozen. You can buy a new 75cc kit from DRATV for $120.00. |

If the steps taht Brent listed for you don't work, then you can go for the top end. If it has low mileage on it, I would pull the head off and replace the head gasket and put a new sparkplug in.

Have you pulled your spakr plug out to check its condition? If it is black and wet you have an oil leak, if its black and dry you are running to rich. Go pull it and tell us what it looks like.

a light tan color is optimal, so you might be on the rich side but that wouldn't explain the oil leak. My guess is just a leaky gasket or seal. I would go about looking for air leaks in the carb intake manifold, spray some wd40 or carb cleaner around thier while it is idleing and see if it starts to idle faster, if it does then that means its leaking air. If not proceed to adjust the idle and air screws. First count how many times each one takes to turn in so you have a reference point of where you started. Then put them back to where it was and have the bike idle. Start adjusting the air screw, maybe 1/8 to 1/4 turn at a time and get it to idle as smooth as possible, if the bike keeps dying while doing this turn the idle screw up alittle so it will continue to idle. Its ok if its idleing alittle fast during the process. Once you get the idleing to as smooth as possible then turn down the idle screw till you get the idle to what you want. And after that see if it helps out your problem. Also use fresh gas when you are jetting the bike, if the gas is more than a couple of months old i would probably drain the gas and start with fresh gas. You don't want to jet the bike for stale gas. -Brent |
