it is an 85 so i assume it's a z50r with no lights? if so it's not missing anything and only has the ignition coils where as the ct does have lights and has ignition and lighting coils. points can be carefully filed with point files or finger nail files but, you need to find the gap specifications in the shop manual which should be floating around the net or doa search on the forums for it. hope that helps. |

well the condenser would be the next step i'd assume you need a new one, so clean points and new condenser in some cases a both new points and condenser everything else should be fine assuming it's a basic bike with no lights if new pints and condenser don't work it could be the coil but, before this make sure it isn't something stupid like kill wire short or bad kill switch. Mexican yella is better at helping out with points, here is another thread involving points. http://www.planetminis.com/f14/i-fou...now-94187.html |

isnt the 71 a 6volt and the 85 a 12 volt? I don't think the coils interchange. I may be wrong as usual though.

I would say bad coil. Make sure its grounded before hooking up another one, or that one will fry too.

Test your coil. With it bolted to the frame but unplugged from its source wire, and with a known good spark plug laying on a good ground point and hooked to the spark plug wire. Once all those conditions are met, take a 6V DC current source (battery charger, lantern battery) and connect the current source's (-) terminal to the bike's frame or engine somewhere and then brush the (+) terminal against the coil's source wire. As you briefly make and break contact, you should see a good solid blue spark at the plug. If you do, you can assume your coil is good enough to run the engine. I would make sure you not only cleaned the points, but filed them flat--no pits or craters--and parallel, cleaned them well with electronics cleaner spray so there's no grit or oily residue left, and gapped them to .012"-.016". You did actually reinstall the flywheel, with woodruff key, and tighten it before checking the spark, right? People have not realized before that they have to do that. The points cam and magnets are part of the flywheel and are necessary for the system to work. |
