Just picked up a1971 SL70 for 20 buck!!!

Hope this fits in this forum. I was on my way to the hardware store and drove by a tag sale and saw a sl70 and a cl70 out front. I quickly turned around just to look with no intentions to buy anything. Thinking they would want 100 dollars+ for it. As i walked up to the bike, i read on the gas tank with a piece of duck tape that reads 20 dollars. So obviously i picked it up. The CL 70 was in far worse shape than the SL but it was only 15 dollars in some way i kinda wish i picked that up to, but i have enough projects as it is. If anyone has a lot of information on this bike, please fill me in. As i know the motors are the same as any other honda, but im wondering what it is worth as my intentions are to restore it to its original, and turn around and sell it.

Also, What do you guys think i should do as for painting etc? The tank is in really good shape besides one dent/rust spot on the outside due to the forks hitting it and obviously extremely faded due to sitting outside for who knows how long. Its a shame someone would let this sit outside to get in this condition. The crazy thing is the inside of the tank is spotless with little to no rust at all.

What would bring in more money just cleaning the original paint or re paint it as it would look much nicer. Also, the same question goes for the fenders and frame? I know for a collector original is worth more, but for someone looking for a great beginner bike for there child new paint is what people would be looking for. Like i said this is going to be my first restoration of a bike and i have more than enough parts to get the motor running 100% again. I know the photos i post look like the motor is missing alot but its all there i just already started taking it apart. First thing on the list for parts is a new seat and pan and a new front headlight.

Ill post pictures throughout the restoration Does anyone know what a SL70 is worth these days?

Media blast all the metal parts. Paint them the factory colors and put it back together with all new bearings and what ever it needs mechanically and cosmetically.

Blast the cases and rebuild the motor and reassemble it.

I dont know if you are going to hit the lottery selling it. But it will be a very cool bike done the way it was when new.

yea im not expecting to hit the lottery but even if i sell it for 100 dollars thats 4 times as much as what i paid for it haha. So painting it its original colors would be the best thing to do instead of cleaning the old? Just dont want to paint it and then get a hard time by people saying why did you paint it haha.

I sold my neighbor an old SL70 and helped with the restoration. Be warned that many of the SL parts aren't as available as the CT parts. I'm hoping side covers came with it. I'd be surprised if you can get this back in decent original shape for under 7-800. Start loading it up with original or reproduction goodies and it'll be over $1000. Here's a pic of his SL for incentive.

Wow 951indy that thing looks mint, yea im not going for rolling off the show room floor mint, and i have enough engine parts and miscellaneous parts laying around my shop to get the thing ins decent running condition. I didnt get side cover (lame i know) but for 20 bucks i couldnt of said no. I got the motor split last night and impressively the transmission in it is perfect it honestly doesnt even look like it was used. Even after its all running etc and ride able if i get 500 bones for it ill be happy. I just may keep it and have another addition to my fleet of bikes haha. How much did you sell your buddies for?

Cool! I think the neighbor is hooked....his uncle gave him a "barn find" CT last year. Its within a week of first kick. Here is a teaser of it. Its going to be even nicer than the SL.

I'm envious of your find, and therefore dumping you in with these four gentlemen. Besides AARP cards, they all have a common bond.

That motion lotion looks like it helps ease the pain when you look at your shopping cart after the end of a parts ordering session!

Re: Just picked up a1971 SL70 for 20 buck!!!

My neighbor just stopped by for our nightly frosty and told me about your $20 find. Nice job, and like he said I'm hooked and would have also picked up the CL. I am spending more time and $ on the CT, but it has sentimental value. My uncle bought it in 69 in CA and moved it back with him about 5 yrs. ago. Last week he called and said he had found the owners manual, would i like to have it! It's good to have family, and friends like 951indy. Good luck, and remember, anything worth doing is worth doing to excess.
