kick shaft issues?

I have a 88 z50 engine, it has an AHP 4 speed tranny that i just put together. It has the older style kickshaft without the ratchet gear. When i first put it together, the kicker would hardley enguage, it would just blow through the stroke and maybe catch at the bottom. So i took it apart and reset the position of the shaft. Now for the life of me, i cant get this thing to work right, alot of times i'll kick it and the kicker will stay down, of i kind of flick it with my foot, it might come back, but if the engine starts, i can hear a clicking, like the gears are touching eachother... Dose anyone have any experience like this? Do i have to split the cases to adress it? will the newe style kickshaft with the ratchet gear work in these cases?
