| My 1969 Z50A Project 1969 K1 Honda Mini Trail My wife bought me this 1969 Z50 K1 for my birthday, just about 2 years ago. I planned on completely rebuilding it but not restoring it. Looks like that’s called restomoding around here. I quickly stripped it down and rebuilt most of the cassis. I bent a pair of taller handle bars for it, and got some grips and a headlight from a local motorcycle place. I decided to use colors similar to stock to paint it but thought it needed some flames. I painted the emblems with model paint after I sandblasted them, they’re probably the nicest thing on the bike now. For the engine I decided that since the piston was seized in it I would get a stroker kit. After some problems getting a stroker kit for it from oldhonda.com the project got put on the backburner. About a year later I decided it was time to get this thing done. I got a TB 88cc kit with the 20mm carb. I also got a cam for it but I can’t remember which one it was. I know it was a Honda cam, I think the Fast Cam? I just recently tore down the bottom end, inspected it and rebuilt whatever needed it. In the process I ended up buying a couple more bottom ends off eBay and used the best parts of them to put together the best engine. When all was said and done I have another almost complete engine. I’m just waiting on the last few parts to finish it. I realized the stator I had wasn’t for a K1 bike. The biggest thing is finding brake cables that will work (I hope I don’t have to cut down the bars) and fabbing up a taillight bracket. This was my first time rebuilding an engine, even one as simple as this. I’m keeping my fingers crossed I did everything right, and it doesn’t immediately blow up. At least I’ve got extra engine parts. I’ll get some updated pics soon, the bike is almost all together now. The whole gallery is here. When it came home: ![]() After some parts and paint: ![]() Not the best bondo or paint but I think it looks pretty cool: ![]() Bottom end mostly together: |

Hey Korda, Your going through what I went through with my 1970 Z50Z Monkey. I also installed the TB 88cc top end w/ 20 carb. You might need to order the TB performance petcock to clear the air filter. I also installed the TB manual clutch. I had the same thoughts as you, - I hope it it doesn't blow up...but all is well. The Monkey pulls like a bat outta hell!! I also installed the Minigunz exhuast pipe but boy is it loud. I maybe selling it since it is too loud to ride on the street...there goes some power. Anyway good job on the paint, I like your tank you did a good job with the flames. Keep up the good work. |

I actually did get the petcock from them. That's good to know about the minigunz exhaust because that was the one I was looking at. I've got a 1" die for the bender so I might try and make something myself.

I'll have to add some finished pics to this thread. I finally got the thing running reliably. Thanks to everyone who helped out in my other threads. All I gotta say is, make sure your grounds are good. I got it going with some wiring help in July but then after running it for a while we couldn't restart it. It sounded like something was seriously wrong in the engine so I parked it. I just moved to San Diego and figured it was time to take it out and fix it. I found that the flywheel had come loose and that's why it wouldn't start. After I tightened that up I still couldn't get it to start. I realized the flywheel wasn't indexed properly when I cranked it back down and I destroyed the key. After a trip to the hardware store and some grinding I made a new key and the bike fired right up. Man is it loud. I'm gonna need a quieter exhaust if I want to ride it on the road. Feels pretty good to go from this... ![]() and this... ![]() To what it is now. My Gallery of pics is here. Dude...can I borrow your wife or g/f? I can get away with a lot of stuff....but there is NO WAY my wife would let me do an engine rebuild on the kitchen counter. Awesome.

New sprockets are on the list. The exhaust is just the stock stuff patched and cobbled together for now. I had to cut down the ape hangers I made because I couldnt find brake cables that were long enough for them and I ran out of patience. Looks pretty funny with me on it:
