My Mood: | EddieNewYork's monkey build thread
Brought it home a couple months ago and since then it's been sitting... waiting on parts and some TLC.

I decided to start with the electrolytic rust removal process for the gas tank. More info on that can be found here. I found a valve stem cap was perfect for plugging the petcock orifice. For the sacrificial anode cap, I used the plastic part from an Ikea board magnet. And, for the 12v charger, I used a modified computer power supply. The last picture shows the sacrificial anode after only 30 minutes into the process.

Hey nice car. Wow! Only 30 minutes? That's some serious power your power supply must be putting out. I wonder how it compares to a battery charger? I think I'm gonna need to borrow your charger one day. I dunno if my Gorilla tank is rusty. Keep the photos coming. You should change the title to "EddieNewYork's monkey build thread" It'll be easier to track. Last edited by shw911; 06-08-2008 at 02:48 AM. |

Yeah, that's what I said too. I haven't looked at it again since then. I started it at 7pm today and it's still running. I can't change the title, it won't let me. Last edited by EddieNewYork; 06-08-2008 at 02:52 AM. | |

Great info. So are you using solution of 1/2 cup washing soda per 5 gallons of water? These build threads are awesome. Please keep us updated on your build. peace, bobbyV |

Sorry for the delay guys. My thread got closed for some reason. Anyways, it's coming along. I stopped the first electrolysis attempt after a couple days. Bobby, I used a teaspoon of Super Washing Soda per gallon of water. I started the process again 9 days ago and it's still going. I ordered some por15 and will be starting that part whenever it gets here. I'll post more pics later tonight when I get home.

Got the rearsets on and the motor is in. I had to throw in a couple washers to fit the motor mounts.

Got the takegawa forks on, but I run into a little probelm. They don't seem to sit center on stock jincheng wheels. The stock jincheng forks are 6 3/8 in (152.4 mm) wide at the axle bolt and the takegawa forks are 5 3/4 in (127 mm). The takegawa forks came with it's own drum brake that has a shorter spacer than the jincheng (See pic 2). It does fit oddly enough but as you can see in the first pic it throws the wheels off to the drum side quite a bit. So now what do I do? Last edited by EddieNewYork; 06-19-2008 at 01:55 AM. |

You can run a digital speedo and have a smaller spacer made to replace the speedo drive and put some (gasp!) washers on the brake side. BTW, nice "Cars Kiddie Stool" / bike stand. LOL It seems to do the job very well though. |

Pete, I bought the forks and bunch of other jdm parts off of Ernesto. Sam, yeah I went to target looking for a cheap stand and those were the only ones I can find. Not bad for $5 and they do work very well. Do you have a link to the digi speedo drive unit? I wonder why it dosen't line up though. If I buy the kitaco or g-craft wheels, will it line up? The digital speedo uses a magnetic pickup so you won't need a drive unit. You'd mount the pickup on the fork and the magnet on the wheel somewhere. You might be able to mount the pickup on the brake arm cable mount and the magnet on the hub. That way, the pickup wire can go up the brake cable to the computer. |

I don't have any pictures here at my friend's house, but I did something similar to the last post. I have one of those cycling computers for bicycles with 12 functions. I mounted it to the brake cable stay at the front wheel and hot glued a magnet onto a valve stem. Lined up great on 8" wheels. I'll try to get pictures soon.

Thanks guys, I think I prefer staying with the manual drive system for now. Brad and Sam suggested some things via email. I'll update when I get home.

I'm going to ditch mine since the manual one is not that accurate. It's 5mph off when I'm going under 40 and more when higher. I didn't even come close to pegging the speedo when I was going 52mph (measured via gps).
