My Z!!! 1971 Z50K2

Well, I have done it. I finally picked up a Z. I knew if I was patient, I would find a good one for the right price. And I did.

Picked this one up for $500 and a stock 50 motor. For the condition it is in I was more than happy to do that deal. He is a buddy of mine, and he paid $1,000 for it a few months ago from a collector who had it sitting in his office for 4 years.

I want to get it to absolute mint condition, including every label, sticker, everything! So please tell me what's not original, and what I should replace.

I already have brand new handlebars, footpegs and footpeg mount, new grips with throttle assembly and cable, and carb gasket kit.

It runs great, I know I need to clean up the cases and head a little bit. That's not a problem. But I was suprised it started on first kick. Runs excellent.

Tell me what you guys think!!! I'm turning it into mint condition and then it is going to sit in my room for years.

Good deal. Looks like the rear fender and light mount might not be from a '71.

The white zip tie holding the rear of the tank isn't stock.

Haha I didn't even see that. And I wasn't sure about the tail light. But I think you are right. Looks like I will order a fender and tail light assembly.

Do you know if I order through Mr.Cycles.com is he guaranteed to have the parts in stock? Because he has like everything listed that you can order. Even like ZB50 frame, tank, seat, everything...

So I was just wondering does he take the order, then try to locate these parts or what...?

It's definitely a '71, but the 69-70 had a bright yellow/silver paint scheme. Does the bike have original paint? '71 is supposed to be Mexican yellow not bright yellow.

Re: My Z!!! 1971 Z50K2

the parts listed on mrcycles are generally not available anymore for the early Z50s unless it is small stuff. No fenders, tanks, taillight brackets, frames. headlight buckets or anything like that are available anymore. the lower exhaust guard is from the year before the one you have pictured, the tank should be yellow and white, need different taillight bracket, the plug in the back of the headlight should be rubber. both fenders are from a 1969,70 model bike. fuel line should be black with no filter and the coil wire should be black. Also the seat could use a little work to be correct also. If you have any other questions let me know as i have a herd of these bikes and can get you pictures of anything you need. Hope this helps you out

Re: My Z!!! 1971 Z50K2

Most of the hard to find parts on mrcycles.com have the replacement part numbers in red next to the originals. It says on his website that if it doesnt have a price and a box next to the item, then it is not avail., but most of the hard to find items have prices and a box next to them? I am thinking about calling them. I need a tank and a seat for a 70 k1

the tanks are 100% not available. Also seats are available thru honda but they are not identical to the originals. I have tried ordering alot of these hard to find parts already and they are not available.

Re: My Z!!! 1971 Z50K2

WoW, nice find you got there! Welcome to the Z world!
When dealing with MRCYCLES, you'll want to call them up before you place an order to make sure what you want is available. As said above, most of the hard to find parts are not available. I've always called ahead before placing an order with them, good guys to deal with.

Re: My Z!!! 1971 Z50K2

wow, that's nice. It's like seeing my own bike about 15 years before I got it.

I agree about the taillight, bracket, fenders...rear fender should be longer from what I can see, and the original taillight bracket bolts both to the frame spine, as yours does, and to the rear fender. The light's lens is more square and less horizontal rectangle, too, with a clear part to illuminate a license plate. I think the kill button is added; mine didn't have that...you use the key switch to shut it off.

The mexican yellow color is more washed out than that, and the lower part would indeed be white that year (but who cares, I say...it still looks nice if you just want it as a cool thing to ride on).

What do you have as an air filter under there? Is that a foam pod filter or something? Mine was missing the little louvered tuna-can-looking filter so I just put a Tecumseh lawnmower filter on there at the time, and still haven't "updated" it. Paper lawnmower filter elements suck in the rain.

Re: My Z!!! 1971 Z50K2

Alright, looks like its going to be all original. I am going to keep it.

Taking it apart tomorrow to sand down the frame and tank and paint it the correct color.

My question now, should I go with the mexican yellow (correct color), or should I go with the red or blue that they offer?? I figured with the vin it is going to show its the mexican yellow, and if I want it all original I should probably choose that color.

What do you guys think?

Re: My Z!!! 1971 Z50K2

I would paint it which ever of the 3 that you like the best. I presonally restored a blue K2 because i liked it best. I dont know for sure but I bet that nothing about the vin will tell the color. Just a guess but dont know for sure. Plus who would ever care enough to look it up.

I really want it to be like a brand new bike basically. That is my goal. And I want it to be all original. I do like the blue the best, but I am uncertain on what I want to do as far as what color. I really don't like the mexican yellow.
