New Validated Speed on YX177V2. 85mph

So I have now validated the new top speed of my GPX177V2 on my CT70. 85MPH (on a slight downhill). I now have a Koso RX1N hooked up to my bike and validated speeds up to 50mph with my Garmin. I figured that since it was dead nuts to the garmin after getting the tire circumference just right, we could take a high speed pass.

I am pleased to say I achieved 85mph on a slight downhill, right down from Fort Myer just outside of DC. I reported how I had the motard going 81mph and my buddy was pulling away from me...so now we know just what's going on.

The RPMs were at 10,000 and that was topped. Geared 17 up front, 29 on the back with a 120/90-10 tire.

I'm going to take some video of my new setup and post it up. Also, I put some new dax style winkers on it, new chrome headlight, and new kitaco headlight brackets. Sharp Sharp.

All I need to do now is update the forks!

Re: New Validated Speed on YX177V2. 85mph

The base motor is a GPX160 and I have a TB full skirted kit on it. I don't know if they even sell this kit anymore.

The wheels are, believe it or not, Stock CT70 steel stamped wheels. I had them balanced up a while ago and I get no shimmy shakes at all with em. The forks are 26mm Lifans that I resprung and has the front disc brake on it. I just put on new brakes and bearings in the rear hub this morning.

As for handling...It is mostly straight line stuff...and again, we were pitched downhill on this speed run. It handles fine...running 120/90-10's front and rear Micheline Boppers on it. Going back the other way it topped at 73 so it makes a big difference.

I am SO pleased with this motor...starts up on one or two kicks every time I take it out. I have to think its pushing out a real 17 rwhp. Stock configuration on it other than a lightened flywheel and slinger, and I have it ported. Running a mikuni VM26 606 on it.

I don't think my ZB will be coming anywhere close to 85mph, but we can all hope I suppose.

You do realize the highest speed limit is 65 mph in Virginia. I do believe that anything over 80 is automatic jail time and reckless driving or something like that. Glad to know you broke both those rules!

On a side note. I hit 53 today on my 49cc *cough* 72cc cheater *cough* bike today. 4th gear pinned probably 11000 to 11500 rpm. I love this motor, it is sooo revvy. A 20mm carb on a small motor gives good top end. Has a high lift long duration cam pushing the valves in the ported short rod Z50 head. Oh yeah, and running 8 inch wheels and a +4 swingarm.

Didn't really intend to type that much about myself. Sorry to steal your fame. Great job hitting 85. That's the highest I've actually heard anybody report for a mini.

(I'm still the "high speed record guy.")

Automatic jail time for speeding at anything 15MPH or more over the speed limit?! That doesn't sound right...

That's what I heard from a guy who got caught doing over 100 in a Ferrari. He might not have had his story straight though. But it's what I've heard.

I am pretty sure 80+ mph in VA and the charge is reckless driving and they have the option to impound your vehicle on the spot.

Here's a quote from this site...Virginia Speed Laws

7. The "Exceeding the Speed Limit" offense is a reckless driving offense and is defined to mean driving either (1) 20 MPH over the maximum posted speed limit of 30 MPH, (2) 60 MPH over the maximum posted speed limit of 35 MPH, (3) 20 MPH over the maximum posted speed limit of 40 MPH or (4) 80 MPH regardless of the maximum posted speed limit. §46.2-862
8. In this State, "reckless driving" is defined as driving "a vehicle on any highway recklessly or at a speed or in a manner so as to endanger the life, limb, or property of any person." §46.2-852 Important. Under Virginia law, the term "reckless driving offense" includes numerous moving violations.
9. Under §46.2-864, a person commits a reckless driving offense if they operate a "motor vehicle at a speed or in a manner so as to endanger the life, limb, or property of any person" on a church, school, recreational facility, business property open to the public or the public parking space of an industrial establishment.
10. For a violation of §46.2-864, the discretionary suspension period is 60 days to 6 months. §46.2-393
11. The court may reduce any reckless driving offense to improper driving if "the degree of culpability is slight." §46.2-869 Important. Under Virginia law, "improper driving" is not a defined crime. As such, law enforcement offices do not charge a person with this offense. Instead, a driver is normally charged with an offense which has been "labeled" as "reckless driving" and, if the circumstances warrant, the court reduces such charge to "improper driving" for sentencing purposes.

Speed limit where I did this pass was 45mph! They had a provision to fine you up to $3,000 for any instance of 20 over the speed limit a few years ago...but that law has been overturned.

Is this a joke?

I have to wonder if it is possible to go much faster on one of these. I think if I popped on a 184cc kit, that may give me fractions of additional HP. If I would run skinnier tires or over inflate them maybe some more speed. I guess I could ditch the heavy duty chain too. It has a WIDE open exhaust on it and is OBSCENELY Loud...i could experiment with the exhaust and intake lengths too. I could lighten it up...its a pig with the steel rims, the sold stainless extra gas tank, the heavy steel bars, the heavy trees, remove the battery, heavy forks, buddy pegs, rear rack. I'll get my buddy that weighs 50 lbs less than me to see what happens with that instead. But based on all that, it would have to be regeared since theoretical max speed is 87mph based on gearing at 10500rpm. And it didn't reach the max RPMs so it currently does not have enough power to go any faster.

As for the rev's, I think 10500 is the maximum a YX160 should ever turn else it will grenade IMO. I had it tached to 10100 at 85mph. I thought that maybe a 28mm carb could help, but the VM26 gets it to 10100...I don't think a 28 will get 400 more out of it...i think its the limit.

That lawyer jargon makes no sense. 60MPH OVER a 35MPH limit is 95MPH. Then it says oh by the way anything over 80, regardless of the posted speed, will get you in trouble. I'm guessing the "60" is a typo.

I know I was lucky to not go to jail and lose my license for a long time with my offense. 107MPH in a 55MPH zone...
