Newbie Question:Swing Arm for Honda Mini Trail

My first post...and I have a hunch it's the first of many.

I had one of these when I was a kid...and just bought one now both to use as my pit bike at races and for some fun for my boys.

It's in great shape...been well setup and currently has a 86CC PCC Motor.

Given the really short wheel base and the strength of the motor (and my desire to modify almost anything I have), I'm interested in a longer swing arm - it might make the bike a bit less "wheelie prone" for my boys which would help with safety.

What's the longest swing arm I can get for this bike & where can I purchase it?

Thanks much,

Rick

Hey Rick the hot ticket for budget minded folks is to pick up a used Xr75/80 swingarm. have a look at this thread for an example. http://www.planetminis.com/f14/monke...ls-132105.html

however there are tons of comapnies in Japan that are making high dollar aluminum extended swingarms and you can pretty much can go as crazy as you like with them. Many examples of this you can find here. 1978-2007 Custom Honda Monkeys

Personally keep it under +16cm over stock length. anything longer and the handling gets weird.

Re: Newbie Question:Swing Arm for Honda Mini Trail

stock swinger is 4 7/8" between pivot, roughy 6 3/4" wheel width, and 10" from the pivot to the center of adjustment

oh and thank you very much for the measurements sounds like the st swinger is the almost the same as the xr swingers

yeah I could be off a little on the pivot mounting measurement...cuz it was still on the bike and I eyeballed it with my measuring tape

That's very helpful...I think I'll start hunting for xn XR75/80 swingarm.

Thanks to all for the help.

Re: Newbie Question:Swing Arm for Honda Mini Trail

xr swingers are great i got mine for 20 or so shipped on ebay ground all the unneeded mounts off, you have to cut the inside of the pivots back about 3/16" on each side to fit the frame and weld in a brake stop i used 1/2" round stock cut a 1" long piece and had to take a little material off the piece on the bench grinder so it fit snug in the brake stop and welded it 3/8" in from the axle bolt opening, once you get the swingarms next to each youll see everything you need and dont need.

Any specific years of XR75/80 swingers that I should get? Are they all the same?

Cheers,

Rick

same here but i think the bike your tlking about was a hardtail version
anyways

only 1 style will pop up if you search xr 75 as long as its the dual shock swinger you should be good
as the xr 80s go the late 70's early 80s were dual shock then the they switched to a mono shock swinger thats aluminum i think in the late 80s

No...I bought it from a guy named David...it was on eBay a few weeks ago and he'd also listed it for sale on a car site that we both belong to.

Thanks,

Rick

Re: Newbie Question:Swing Arm for Honda Mini Trail

I was digging around for a swing arm...focused on finding one for an XR75 and seems like most of them on eBay are around $25-40 plus $15-20 in shipping.

I just found a place selling a brand new OEM swingarm for $104 and they'll ship for free. It's listed as part number 3873165-001 and identified for a 1977 XR75.

Is this the one I need?

Thanks much for bearing with the newbie questions.

Rick

Re: Newbie Question:Swing Arm for Honda Mini Trail

They show up here on the PM classifieds sometimes for $30-40 shipped. I know this because that's where I got the one sitting in my garage right now. Keep an eye there; you're bound to find one pretty soon.
