| Oil Coolers
Please educate me on oil coolers (or increasing oil flow). When is it recommended? Just on engines that you add the bore kits to? If your're buying a larger engine (say 125cc aftermarket), you don't have to add an oil cooler, do you? I'm assuming it's for engines that you buildup from bore kits. Am I off the mark? When, where, and why are they recommended? -Thanks |

From my understanding you add a oil cooler if you have a hop up kit of 108cc or more -- 117cc etc as the addition of the oil cooler keeps the head temps down by 10% or better and this helps the longevity of the motor in the long run. High revving race motors is a must as there rpms are much higher than a stock motor Ie.. motors that you do not have a lighting coil on them - like pit bike motors that have inner rotor kits in them that make them spin much higher rpms -- or as stated above motors with lighting coils in hot climates -- most aftermarket motors like Lifan recomend a oil cooler in there 140cc /150cc motors -- this is my understanding -- I am only two years new in the Mini motor realm of things -- the Japan racing motors that I see on bikes all have them Takagawa / Kitaco etc... 124+R and above cc's -- hope that this helps you a bit -- good luck

Thanks - I appreciate the advice. Looks as though I won't have to worry about the oil coolers. I'm not planning anything radical for engines sizes. I'll probably stay in the 90cc range with the bore kit rebuilds and may purchase Lifan 110cc for the ct70. I'll (or my friends) just end up getting hurt with more power! At least the injuries will be less severe! Thanks for your time... P.S. - Do you know if there are bore kits for aftermarket engines, or are all the ones I see on various websites just for the oringal Honda engines? |

Just to clarify. Oil coolers are not necessitated just by engine size, but by how hot the motor they are used on will get. An 88cc street use motor probably could use an oil cooler but one used on the trails probably wouldn't. There is a point however where the engine does make a lot of heat and an oil cooler is pretty much necessary. 108 is about the highest you can go and still have a choice. Some kits like the 124 DOHC kits don't really have any fins on the head at all so it is mandatory to have a cooler. So keep in mind the intended use when choosing to buy a cooler. Also, IRK's don't make the engine spin any faster. They only increase how quickly the motor accelerates to the same RPM. |
