| Old School XR75 build
Since there is no forum for this...thought I would post it here. The set-up is that a friend of mine found a 1976 XR75 at a sale that his boyhood best buddy had raced to number 6 in the nation in Texas, back in 1976. The bike was a package PK racer that he and his Dad built and raced in Michigan and he placed well enough that season to qualify for the Nationals. They made the trek, finished well, was ridden some for a few years later, then forgotten. It was picked over, engine missing no rear wheel, rusty and dusty etc. when purchased at auction. Then, my friend called me and said he had a "special" project to do and wanted me to be involved as I have done many XR75 builds in the past. It was going to be his intent to restore the bike and give it back to his friend as a gift. Pretty cool. So I get it and it is in bad shape. It still has the neat aftermarket CH box section swingarm with the lay down shock kit including the original Mulholland shocks. Also, the PK fiberglass gas tank was still there (custom painted by the owner with "red, white and boogie" homemade graphics on it). It has a trick external spring fork kit on it (like an old Maico) that utilizes no internal springs, and has trick air-caps on the forks.) The big bore engine with button mag ignition, PK Ripper pipe etc. was all missing unfortunately. The frame needed blasted and powder coated. I built a 50mm big bore engine complete with Webco cam etc. for it and found an original PK pipe (not cheap). Here is a picture of the freshly powdercoated frame.... ![]() I am now mocking it all up and have mounted new tires, recovered the seat, mounted some plastic etc... What do you all think? ![]() More to come.... Last edited by AHRMA361; 09-15-2007 at 09:51 PM. |

Love those XR75's. Had a '78 back in the day and ran the living daylights out of that thing trying to keep up with my friends on their YZ80s. FastMC - what are they looking to get for the bike at your shop? AHRMA361 - you've got some nice bikes there. Nice looking Can-AM in the back. |

Z-Man, thanks. That is my 1980 MX6 126. Had it for decades now. Just raced it at Mid-Ohio in July. I also have an MX3 250 Black Widow. Firepower - See above for the C-A info. It is an RL250 Suzuki I restored some years ago. No TL's in the stable unfortunately. Good eye on my crusty SL100, MB5 and the CT's although one of them is a clone (wifes bike). The radial head is a DG on a trick 1974 CR125 Elsinore race bike. Buried in there is also my 1973 CR250 Elsinore, KTM Duke, 1981 CR450 Elsinore, 1981 Yamaha YZ250, 1973 XR75, 1972 Hodaka Ace 100 B+ and a few more in my shop.....fortunately I have a barn that can house the overflow...I just love old bikes, working on them restoring them and racing them too. Let me see some pictures of the KSI project. I loved the look of those Knobby Shop bikes... |

I see the RL now, with the image blown up and nose to the screen. Not that my eyes are aging VERY early rough draft of the KSI clone. YZ60 frame will be modified to look correct-er. ![]() JT1 mock-up

That motor in the two pictures up looks like it took some beating. It's not supposed to be that dark is it?

Engine in, pipe and carb on...getting close to firing it up....you may ask, "Why does the tank look like nothing has been done to it?". Answer is: Because it is untouched from the day over 30 years ago that the owner and his Dad customized it. I will leave it up to him if he wants to restore it after it gets delivered to him in Colorado this month. |

When the guy sees that bike, and sees his old tank intact, he is probably gonna cry. That is very cool. |

Since AHPminis asked....here is the 1974 Honda CR125 Elsinore. Was bone stock and found in a horse barn when I started on it about 7 years ago. ![]() I found one of the earliest DG aluminum arms made way back and am glad I did because you can't find them today at any price that aren't the type with the moved up mounts. I have a fork kit in it with MT125 springs, DG air caps, rear has Works Performance shocks. A Pro-Tec chain tensioner keeps the o-ring chain where it is supposed to be. Engine has extensive mods including a DG radial head, GEM reed assembly, custom porting work, 34mm Mikuni Carb, DG pipe etc. Lets just say it performs on a different level than the stock piston port induction and 28mm Keihin. I have had it in many cosmetic configurations but it has now been in the opaque fenders, white side panels, red RC replica tank and blue seat for a few years. Note the Preston Petty "Garder" fork protectors if anyone is old enough to know what those are. It's different, some purists hate it. I obviously like it. Nice build! That will be amazing to see their faces when re-united with their old XR75! Very cool build indeed! Great job. Just started my 1976 XR75 vintage racer replica build. Frame/swingarm now silver, rims and hubs powdercoated too in vintage gold. Seat done. Going with Renthal vintage mx bars, fenders and tank painted in a grey metallic. DG pipe. Big bore Powroll kit. Will post up some pictures soon. |

[quote=tmas;663678]Fastmc..... I would pick it up in a minute. Here is an old pic of my 1976 XR75. I used to think it was the fastest till I ran into the RM80 & YZ80 and I ate their dust. The performance of a stock XR75 is very underwelming. |

gotta love the XR75. That was my second bike as a kid. First bike was a z50, then we got a bit bigger and got our hands on the XR75. Good memories. The bike looks great. Nice work. |
