| Which one's the lighting coil?
on both my old Z motors there's 4 wires and 2 coils on the ignition plate.. is it the smaller or the larger one that's for the lights? i think the wire colors are red, blue, brown and black any one know what's what? also, i know the system is suppose to be 6 volts , but can you just run a 12 volt regulator and get 12 from teh lighting coil or is it not strong enough to support 12 volts and 55 watts for a halogen headlamp? i wired my own stator on my CRF and used a regulator from Hooperimports.com and it's been great, i'd like for mty Z to at least have some sort of light on it as well |

The larger one if for lights. You actually don't even need a regulator if you use 12v bulbs with a 6 volt stator. The light won't be as bright as your crf even with the motor rapped out.

cool, thanks ! any idea on what color wires are what? the bike's is in pieces for it's "rebuild" so i'm not sure what goes wher until i put it back together. I"m going to solder up a new wire harness in general if i can get a schematic for the stock one for a basic foundation to start from BTW...this is turboglenn, i'm just logged in from trizz's PC...we're drinking knobb creek and i'm too buzzed to try adn loging |

either that or it just confused me more hahaha.. i don't see where the blue and grey wires go... i guess the schematic is a little different than i had pictured.. do you actually feed the lights off the same source as the ignition?

There should be 2 wires that come off the larger lighting coil. The way I did it on my bike before I wound my crf stator was I hooked one wire to the positive of the light and the other to the negative. By doing that it increased the voltage and made my light brighter. No reg. was used in that setup. It put out about 18 volt at redline. The crf stator after I wound that put out about 56v at redline. |

i just took off the flywheel on my knockoff off(waiting to pull the stator plate when my irk comes in the mail) and the top coil looks to be wrapped in black string, is that what the honda upper coils look like?? im sure tim knows |

both coils on mine are wrapped in copper wire... but there's something weirdabotu the wires...either they change colors underneath the windings, or they have just changed color from use over the years. the wire colors in the harness don't correspond to the ones on the ignition plate.. i'll get it figured out when it's running and i can throw a voltmeter on and see which one's are getting drawn on and what voltage each one puts out. thanks for all the help though |
